Abstract

Methods and systems for determining usage are described. Initially, site-centric data and panel-centric data are accessed and pre-processed. Initial usage measurement data is determined based on the pre-processed site-centric data. One or more adjustment factors are determined based on the pre-processed panel-centric data. The one or more adjustment factors are applied to the initial usage measurement data to generate an adjusted usage measurement data. Reports based on the adjusted usage measurement data are generated.

Claims (48)

1. A method for determining usage overlap between different types of devices, the method comprising:

accessing, by a reporting server, usage data representing network resource accesses by client devices across a plurality of households, the usage data comprising a device identifier and an IP address for each network resource access;

determining, based on the usage data, a first set of qualified households during a first time period, wherein each household in the first set of qualified households is associated with a first defined number and a first defined type of client devices;

determining, based on the usage data, a second set of qualified households during a second time period, wherein each household in the second set of qualified households is associated with a second defined number and a second defined type of client devices;

receiving, by the reporting server, site-centric data from client devices executing software configured to monitor access events on the client devices;

determining, based on the site-centric data, usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households;

determining, based on the usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households, one or more overlap factors;

determining, based on the usage data and the one or more overlap factors, a number of unique views of the network resource; and

generating, by the reporting server, one or more reports including the number of unique views of the network resource, wherein at least one report of the one or more reports comprises an improved estimate of the number of unique view of the network resource relative to an estimate that is not based, at least in part, on the determined one or more overlap factors, and wherein the at least one report is used to improve the planning, buying, or selling of advertising related to the network resource.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is associated with a single IP address.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is persistent for a threshold time period.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein accessing the usage data comprises accessing the usage data for at least the first and second time periods.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein accessing the usage data comprises accessing the usage data in a geographic region.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device identifier is associated with a user agent.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each client device in a qualified household of the first or second sets of qualified households is associated with the same IP address.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second defined type of client devices is a home device or a work device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second defined number of client devices is one.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the usage data are received from beacon instructions executed by content-presenting applications on client devices from which the network resource accesses originate, and

the beacon instructions are configured to cause an executing client device to send a message to a collection server.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the usage data is collected via a browser application or a mobile application.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second defined type of client device is a mobile system, shared use system, or non-shared use system.

13. A device, comprising:

a processor; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, effectuate operations comprising:

accessing, by a reporting server, usage data representing network resource accesses by client devices across a plurality of households, the usage data comprising a device identifier and an IP address for each network resource access;

determining, based on the usage data, a first set of qualified households during a first time period, wherein each household in the first set of qualified households is associated with a first defined number and a first defined type of client devices;

determining, based on the usage data, a second set of qualified households during a second time period, wherein each household in the second set of qualified households is associated with a second defined number and a second defined type of client devices;

receiving, by the reporting server, site-centric data from client devices executing software configured to monitor access events on the client devices;

determining, based on the site-centric data, usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households;

determining, based on the usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households, one or more overlap factors;

determining, based on the usage data and the one or more overlap factors, a number of unique views of the network resource; and

generating, by the reporting server, one or more reports including the number of unique views of the network resource, wherein at least one report of the one or more reports comprises an improved estimate of the number of unique view of the network resource relative to an estimate that is not based, at least in part, on the determined one or more overlap factors, and wherein the at least one report is used to improve the planning, buying, or selling of advertising related to the network resource.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is associated with a single IP address.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is persistent for a threshold time period.

16. The device of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the first or second defined type of client devices is a home device or a work device.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, effectuate operations comprising:

accessing, by a reporting server, usage data representing network resource accesses by client devices across a plurality of households, the usage data comprising a device identifier and an IP address for each network resource access;

determining, based on the usage data, a first set of qualified households during a first time period, wherein each household in the first set of qualified households is associated with a first defined number and a first defined type of client devices;

determining, based on the usage data, a second set of qualified households during a second time period, wherein each household in the second set of qualified households is associated with a second defined number and a second defined type of client devices;

receiving, by the reporting server, site-centric data from client devices executing software configured to monitor access events on the client devices;

determining, based on the site-centric data, usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households;

determining, based on the usage information for the first and second sets of qualified households, one or more overlap factors;

determining, based on the usage data and the one or more overlap factors, a number of unique views of the network resource; and

generating, by the reporting server, one or more reports including the number of unique views of the network resource, wherein at least one report of the one or more reports comprises an improved estimate of the number of unique view of the network resource relative to an estimate that is not based, at least in part, on the determined one or more overlap factors, and wherein the at least one report is used to improve the planning, buying, or selling of advertising related to the network resource.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is associated with a single IP address.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein a client device in each qualified household in the first and second sets of qualified households is associated with a device identifier that is persistent for a threshold time period.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the first or second defined type of client devices is a home device or a work device.
