ADHESION PROMOTERS AND COMPOSITIONS FOR CONTAINERS AND OTHER ARTICLES
This invention provides a coating composition that contains an aromatic adhesion promoter. Containers and other articles comprising the coatings and methods of making such containers and other articles are also provided. The invention further provides compositions including the adhesion promoter, which have utility in a variety of coating end uses, including, for example, valve and pipe coatings.

28 . A food or beverage container coating composition, comprising:
a binder polymer; and
an aromatic adhesion promoter that is the reaction product of an aromatic diepoxide;
wherein the coating composition is a thermoset coating composition that is substantially free of each of mobile or bound bisphenol A, bisphenol F, bisphenol S, and epoxides thereof.
29 . The coating composition of claim 28 , wherein the aromatic adhesion promoter comprises a reaction product of a sulfur-based or phosphorus-based acid and the aromatic diepoxide.
30 . The coating composition of claim 29 , wherein the aromatic diepoxide comprises an aromatic diglycidyl ether.
31 . The coating composition of claim 29 , wherein the aromatic diepoxide is a compound of Formula (II):
wherein:
each R 1 is independently an atom or group having at atomic weight of at least 15 Daltons;
w is 4;
each v is independently 1 to 4, wherein each of the phenylene groups depicted in Formula (II) includes at least one R 1 attached to the ring at an ortho position relative to the depicted oxygen atom;
R 2 , if present, is preferably a divalent group;
n is 0 or 1, with the proviso that if n is 0, the phenylene groups depicted in Formula (II) can optionally join to form a fused ring system in which case w is 3 and v is 0 to 3;
t is 0 or 1
s is 0 to 1;
R 3 , if present, is a divalent group; and
each R 4 is independently a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group that may include one or more heteroatoms.
32 . The coating composition of claim 31 , wherein n is 1 and R 2 is —CH 2 —.
33 . The coating composition of claim 29 , wherein the adhesion promoter has a number average molecular weight of less than 7,000.
34 . The coating composition of claim 31 , wherein the adhesion promoter is a non-polymeric material.
35 . The coating composition of claim 31 , wherein the adhesion promoter comprises a reaction product of the phosphorus-based acid and the aromatic diepoxide, and wherein the wherein the phosphorus-based acid comprises a phosphinic acid, a phosphonic acid or phosphoric acid.
36 . The coating composition of 28 , wherein the adhesion promoter is present in the coating composition in amounts up to 10 wt-%, and wherein the coating composition is free of any polyhydric phenols that exhibit an estrogenic agonist activity in the MCF-7 assay greater than or equal to that exhibited by 4,4′-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol in the assay.
37 . The coating composition of claim 31 , wherein the adhesion promoter is present in the coating composition in amounts of between 0.1 to 6 wt. %.
38 . The coating composition of claim 29 , wherein the binder polymer comprises a polyester resin, acrylic resin, a polyether resin, a grafted polyester-acrylic resin, a grafted polyether-acrylic resin a grafted polyester-epoxy resin, or a combination thereof.
39 . The coating composition of claim 38 , wherein the composition further includes a lubricant, a blocked isocyanate crosslinker, or both.
40 . The coating composition of claim 29 , wherein the coating composition is free of any dihydric phenols, or corresponding diepoxides, that exhibit an estrogenic agonist activity in the MCF-7 assay greater than about that of 4,4′-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2,6-dibromophenol).
41 . A coated food or beverage container or portion thereof having a cured layer of the coating composition of claim 29 .
42 . A food or beverage container coating composition, comprising:
a binder polymer; and
an aromatic adhesion promoter that is the reaction product of a tetramethyl bisphenol F based compound.
43 . The coating composition of claim 42 , wherein the tetramethyl bisphenol F based compound comprises tetramethyl bisphenol F diglycidyl ether, and wherein the aromatic adhesion promoter comprises a reaction product of tetramethyl bisphenol F diglycidyl ether and a sulfur-based or phosphorus-based acid.
44 . The coating composition of claim 43 , wherein the adhesion promoter comprises a reaction product of the phosphorus-based acid, and wherein the wherein the phosphorus-based acid comprises a phosphinic acid, a phosphonic acid or phosphoric acid.
45 . The coating composition of claim 43 , wherein the adhesion promoter is a non-polymeric material.
46 . The coating composition of claim 43 , wherein the adhesion promoter has a number average molecular weight of less than 7,000, and wherein the adhesion promoter is present in the coating composition in amounts of between 0.1 to 6 wt. %.
47 . The coating composition of claim 46 , wherein the binder polymer comprises a polyester resin, acrylic resin, a polyether resin, a grafted polyester-acrylic resin, a grafted polyether-acrylic resin a grafted polyester-epoxy resin, or a combination thereof.
48 . The coating composition of claim 48 , wherein the coating composition further includes a lubricant, a blocked isocyanate crosslinker, or both.
