Abstract

Methods are described for the commissioning of optically switchable window networks. During commissioning, network addresses are paired with the locations of installed devices for components on a window network. Commissioning may also involve steps of testing and validating the network devices. By correctly pairing the location of a device with its network address, a window network is configured to function such that controls sent over the network reach their targeted device(s) which in turn respond accordingly. The methods described herein may reduce frustrations that result from mispairing and installation issues that are common to conventional commissioning practices. Commissioning may involve recording a response to a manually or automatically initiated trigger. Commissioning methods described herein may rely on user input, or be automatic, not requiring user input.

Claims (37)

1. A method using a commissioning logic to auto-commission a plurality of network components of a hierarchical window network in a building, the plurality of network components including one or more optically switchable windows, the method comprising:

(a) determining, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, a respective network identification (ID), and,

(b) in accordance with an architectural plan and an interconnect drawing of the hierarchical window network, pairing, with the commissioning logic, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, the respective network ID determined in (a) with a corresponding physical location depicted in the architectural plan; and

(c) storing, in a network configuration file, information describing the pairing

(d) operating the one or more optically switchable windows through network communication using the respective network ID.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein an actual location of at least one of the optically switchable windows is obtained using geo-positioning techniques.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising comparing the actual location of the at least one optically switchable window with the corresponding physical location depicted in the architectural plan.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the geo-positioning techniques include a UWB protocol communications or other wireless process.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one optically switchable window includes a micro-location chip configured to implement the UWB protocol.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the geo-positioning techniques obtain the actual location to an accuracy within about 10 centimeters.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the optically switchable windows is coupled with a memory device on which the respective network ID is stored.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the memory device is coupled with a dock for a window controller or a pigtail of the at least one window.

9. The method of claim 7 wherein the memory device stores other information related to the at least one window.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the other information includes one or more of an identification of a window controller and/or lite of the at least one window, window type, window dimensions, manufacturing date, bus bar length, zone membership, and/or current firmware.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the commissioning logic accessing the respective network ID and/or the other information.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the commissioning logic associating the respective network ID and/or the other information to the physical location depicted in the architectural plan.

13. A commissioning system using a commissioning logic to auto-commission a plurality of network components of a hierarchical window network in a building, the plurality of network components including one or more optically switchable windows, the commissioning system configured to:

(a) determine, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, a respective network identification (ID), and,

(b) in accordance with an architectural plan and an interconnect drawing of the hierarchical window network, pair, with the commissioning logic, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, the respective network ID determined in (a) with a corresponding physical location depicted in the architectural plan; and

(c) store, in a network configuration file, information describing the pairing

(d) operating the one or more optically switchable windows through network communication using the respective network ID.

14. The commissioning system of claim 13 , wherein an actual location of at least one of the optically switchable windows is obtained using geo-positioning techniques and the commissioning system is further configured to compare the actual location of the at least one optically switchable window with the corresponding physical location depicted in the architectural plan.

15. The commissioning system of claim 14 , wherein the geo-positioning techniques include a UWB protocol communications or other wireless process.

16. The commissioning system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one optically switchable window includes a micro-location chip configured to implement the UWB protocol.

17. The commissioning system of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the optically switchable windows is coupled with a memory device on which the respective network ID is stored.

18. The commissioning system of claim 17 , wherein the memory device is coupled with a dock for a window controller or a pigtail of the at least one window.

19. The commissioning system of claim 17 wherein the memory device stores other information related to the at least one window.

20. The commissioning system of claim 19 , wherein the other information includes one or more of an identification of a window controller and/or lite of the at least one window, window type, window dimensions, manufacturing date, bus bar length, zone membership, and/or current firmware.

21. The commissioning system of claim 19 , further comprising the commissioning logic associating the respective network ID and/or the other information to the physical location depicted in the architectural plan.

22. A processing apparatus using a commissioning logic to auto-commission a plurality of network components of a hierarchical window network in a building, the plurality of network components including one or more optically switchable windows, the processing apparatus including one or more master controllers, network controllers, window controllers and/or administrative processing machines, the processing apparatus configured to:

(a) determine, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, a respective network identification (ID), and,

(b) in accordance with an architectural plan and an interconnect drawing of the hierarchical window network, pair, with the commissioning logic, for each of the one or more optically switchable windows, the respective network ID determined in (a) with a corresponding physical location depicted in the architectural plan; and

(c) store, in a network configuration file, information describing the pairing

(d) operating the one or more optically switchable windows through network communication using the respective network ID.
