Abstract

A valve assembly, a valve adapter and a bicycle tire are provided. The valve assembly includes a valve stem having a passage. A cap member is fluidly coupled to the passage and has circumferential concavity on an outer diameter adjacent an end. A core body is coupled to the valve stem and has a an axial opening. A biasing member is disposed within the axial opening. A seat is coupled between the core body and the cap member. A first sealing member is movably disposed between a first and second position, the sealing member being biased against the seat by the biasing member, the sealing member having a first end adjacent the seat and a lower portion. A second sealing member is operably coupled to the passage to selectively seal at least a portion of the passage, in response to movement of the lower portion.

Claims (41)

1 . A pneumatic valve assembly for a pressure vessel, the pneumatic valve assembly comprising:

a valve stem having a central passage extending therethrough;

a cap member having an end opening fluidly coupled to the central passage, the cap member having a circumferential concavity on an outer diameter adjacent the end;

a core body coupled between the valve stem and the cap member, the core body having a an axial opening extending therethrough;

a biasing member operably disposed within the axial opening;

a seat coupled between the core body and the cap member;

a first sealing member movably disposed between a first position and a second position and at least partially within the axial opening, the sealing member being biased against the seat by the biasing member, the sealing member having a first end adjacent the seat and a lower portion; and

a second sealing member operably coupled to the central passage to selectively seal at least a portion of the central passage from the pressure vessel, the second sealing member being operably engaged and opened by the lower portion when in the second position.

2 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a rim gasket coupled to an end of the valve stem opposite the seat.

3 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 2 , wherein the second sealing member is integrally formed with the rim gasket.

4 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 3 , wherein the second sealing member includes an end portion disposed across an end of the central passage, the end portion having a plurality of slits that define a plurality of flaps.

5 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a rod member coupled to the lower portion and having a first end opposite the lower portion, the end engaging the second sealing member when in the second position.

6 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 5 , wherein the rod member includes a plurality of ribs extending axially along at least a portion of the rod member.

7 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 6 , wherein the rod member includes an opening on a second end opposite the first end, the lower portion being coupled to the opening by a press fit.

The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 5 , wherein the core body includes a first chamber housing the first sealing member, and a second chamber housing the second sealing member, the first chamber and second chamber being fluid communication when the second sealing member is in an open position.

9 . A pneumatic valve adapter for a bicycle valve stem, the valve adapter comprising:

a core body having an axial opening extending therethrough, the core body being configured to couple with the valve stem;

a cap member coupled to the core body, the cap member having an end opening fluidly coupled to the axial opening, the cap member having a circumferential concavity on an outer diameter adjacent the end;

a biasing member operably disposed within the axial opening;

a seat coupled between the core body and the cap member; and

a first sealing member movably disposed between a first position and a second position and at least partially within the axial opening, the sealing member being biased against the seat by the biasing member, the sealing member having a first end adjacent the seat and a lower portion, the lower portion having a length that extends past an end of the core body.

10 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a rod member coupled to the lower portion and having a first end opposite the lower portion, the rod member extending in a direction opposite the core body.

11 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 10 , wherein the rod member includes a plurality of ribs extending axially along at least a portion of the rod member.

12 . The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 11 , wherein the rod member includes an opening on a second end opposite the first end, the lower portion being coupled to the opening by a press fit.

The pneumatic valve assembly of claim 9 , wherein the core body includes a first chamber housing the first sealing member, and a second chamber housing the second sealing member, the first chamber and second chamber being fluid communication when the second sealing member is in an open position.

14 . A bicycle tire comprising:

a rim;

a tire coupled to the rim, the rim and tire cooperating to define a pressure vessel;

a valve stem sealingly coupled to the rim and having a central passage extending therethrough;

a cap member having an end opening fluidly coupled to the central passage, the cap member having a circumferential concavity on an outer diameter adjacent the end;

a core body coupled between the valve stem and the cap member, the core body having a an axial opening extending therethrough;

a biasing member operably disposed within the axial opening;

a seat coupled between the core body and the cap member;

a first sealing member movably disposed between a first position and a second position and at least partially within the axial opening, the sealing member being biased against the seat by the biasing member, the sealing member having a first end adjacent the seat and a lower portion; and

a second sealing member operably coupled to the central passage to selectively seal at least a portion of the central passage from the pressure vessel, the second sealing member being operably engaged and opened by the lower portion when in the second position to fluidly couple the central passage to the pressure vessel.

15 . The bicycle tire of claim 14 , further comprising a rim gasket coupled to an end of the valve stem opposite the seat and being at least partially disposed in the pressure vessel, the rim gasket being further disposed between the valve stem and the rim.

16 . The bicycle tire of claim 15 , wherein the second sealing member is integrally formed with the rim gasket.

17 . The bicycle tire of claim 16 , wherein the second sealing member includes an end portion disposed across an end of the central passage, the end portion having a plurality of slits that define a plurality of flaps.

18 . The bicycle tire of claim 14 , further comprising a rod member coupled to the lower portion and having a first end opposite the lower portion, the end engaging the second sealing member when in the second position.

19 . The bicycle tire of claim 18 , wherein the rod member includes a plurality of ribs extending axially along at least a portion of the rod member.

20 . The bicycle tire of claim 18 , wherein the core body includes a first chamber housing the first sealing member, and a second chamber housing the second sealing member, the first chamber and second chamber being fluid communication when the second sealing member is in an open position.
