Abstract

Various surgical hubs are disclosed. A surgical hub comprises a storage device; a processor coupled to the storage device; and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to: receive data from a surgical instrument coupled to the surgical hub; and determine a rate at which to transfer the data from the surgical hub to a remote cloud-based medical analytics network based on available storage capacity of the storage device.

Claims (55)

1. A modular surgical system comprising:

a hospital data barrier;

an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) database within the hospital data barrier to store patient data using a key that uniquely identifies a patient EMR;

a first hub within the hospital data barrier, wherein the first hub is to:

store redacted data with a unique anonymous procedure number;

interrogate the EMR database to retrieve the patient data and the key; and

combine, by the key and the unique anonymous procedure number, the redacted data with the patient data to form an un-redacted data set; and

a second hub within the hospital data barrier in communication with the first hub, wherein the first hub is to transmit the un-redacted data set to the second hub; and

wherein the first and second hub are to communicate with a cloud-based analytics network located outside the hospital data barrier and the first hub is to transmit a redacted dataset to the cloud-based analytics network.

2. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the first hub is to redact data, from the un-redacted data set, that is used to correlate a patient with a surgical procedure or a time of surgical procedure to create the redacted dataset.

3. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the first hub is to redact data, from the un-redacted data set, that is used to correlate a surgeon with a surgical procedure to create the redacted dataset.

4. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the second hub is to:

redact data from the un-redacted data set used to correlate a patient with a surgical procedure or a time of surgical procedure to create the redacted dataset; and

transmit redacted data to the cloud-based analytics network.

5. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the first hub is to:

delete data associated with an identity of a patient from the un-redacted data set;

extract relevant patient data from the un-redacted data set; and

store a redacted data file with the extracted relevant patient data by the unique anonymous procedure number.

6. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a modular device coupled to the first hub; and

wherein the first hub is to:

determine a control parameter of the modular device based on the un-redacted data; and

transmit the control parameter to the modular device to adjust the control parameter of the modular device.

7. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a modular device coupled to the first hub; and

wherein the cloud-based analytics network is to:

determine a control parameter of the modular device based on the redacted data; and

transmit the control parameter to the modular device to adjust the control parameter of the modular device.

8. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the first hub stores a data pair grouped by surgical procedure, wherein a first data set of the data pair is associated with a surgical procedure and a second data set of the data pair is associated with an outcome of the surgical procedure.

9. The modular surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a cloud-based analytics network outside the hospital data barrier.

10. A method of operating a modular surgical system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a first surgical hub within a hospital data barrier, patient data and key;

sending, by the first surgical hub, un-redacted data to a second surgical hub within a hospital data barrier;

redacting, by the first surgical hub, the un-redacted data to form redacted data, wherein redacting comprises removing the patient data that identifies a patient; and

sending, by the first surgical hub, redacted data to a cloud-based analytics network;

interrogating, by the first surgical hub, an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) database to retrieve patient data and a key that uniquely identifies a patient EMR in the EMR database;

storing, by the first surgical hub, the redacted data with a unique anonymous procedure number; and

combining, by the key and the unique anonymous procedure number, the redacted data with the patient data to form the un-redacted data set.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein redacting data comprises removing data from the un-redacted data set used to correlate a patient with a surgical procedure or a time of surgical procedure to create the redacted data.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein redacting data comprises removing data used to correlate a surgeon with a surgical procedure to create the redacted data.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

redacting, by the second surgical hub, the un-redacted data to form redacted data, wherein redacting comprises removing patient data that identifies a patient; and

sending, by the second surgical hub, redacted data to the cloud-based analytics network.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first surgical hub stores a data pair grouped by surgical procedure, wherein a first data set of the data pair is associated with a surgical procedure and a second data set of the data pair is associated with an outcome of the surgical procedure.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising displaying, by a user interface within the hospital data barrier, the un-redacted data wherein the user interface coupled to the first surgical hub.

16. A method of operating a surgical hub comprising:

storing, by a first surgical hub, redacted data with a unique anonymous procedure number, wherein the first surgical hub is within a hospital data barrier;

interrogating, by the first surgical hub, a modular device coupled to the first surgical hub;

receiving, by the first surgical hub, from the modular device, an un-redacted data set comprising patient identity data and patient data, wherein the un-redacted data combines, by a key and the unique anonymous procedure number, the redacted data with the patient data to form the un-redacted data set;

redacting, by the first surgical hub, the patient identity data from the data set to form a redacted data set;

sending, by the first surgical hub, the un-redacted data set to a second surgical hub; and

sending, by the first surgical hub, the redacted data set to a data analytics cloud network.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising adjusting, by the first surgical hub, operation of the surgical hub based on the redacted data.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising adjusting, by the first surgical hub, operation of the modular device based on the redacted data.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein redacting comprises removing data from the un-redacted data set used to correlate a patient with a surgical procedure or a time of the surgical procedure to create the redacted data and data used to correlate a surgeon with the surgical procedure to create the redacted data.
