Abstract

A machine for providing a single serving of a frozen confection includes a housing and a lid movably attached to the housing and configured to move between an open position in which a receptacle sized to receive a pod is exposed and a closed position in which the receptacle is inaccessible, the pod containing ingredients for producing the single serving of the frozen confection. The machine includes a cooling assembly sized to receive the ingredients and disposed within the housing such that a longitudinal axis of the cooling assembly is stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position, the cooling assembly operable to cool the ingredients to produce the single serving of the frozen confection. The machine includes a mixing motor operable to rotate a paddle to mix the ingredients to produce the frozen confection from the ingredients.

Claims (55)

a housing;

a lid movably attached to the housing and configured to move between an open position in which a receptacle sized to receive a single-use, disposable pod is exposed and a closed position in which the receptacle is inaccessible, the pod having a bottom surface and a sidewall extending from the bottom surface, the bottom surface and the sidewall defining an interior of the pod, the interior of the pod being at least partially pre-filled with ingredients for producing the single serving of the frozen confection;

a cooling assembly sized to receive the ingredients and disposed within the housing such that a longitudinal axis of the cooling assembly is stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position, the cooling assembly operable to cool the ingredients to produce the single serving of the frozen confection;

a mixing motor operable to rotate a paddle to mix the ingredients to produce the single serving of the frozen confection from the ingredients;

a display disposed on the housing and viewable from a front side of the machine, the display being stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position;

a processor electrically connected to and operable to control the display, the cooling assembly, and the mixing motor; and

a dispensing opening sized to dispense the produced single serving of the frozen confection from the machine, located below the lid, located below the display, and offset from the longitudinal axis of the cooling assembly,

wherein the machine is configured such that a new pod is used for each serving of the single serving of the frozen confection, and the pod is pre-filled with enough ingredients to provide the single serving of the frozen confection.

2. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the lid is pivotally attached to the housing.

3. The machine of claim 2 , wherein the machine is configured such that the lid pivots about a pivot axis in moving between the open position and the closed position, the pivot axis being substantially horizontal such that a longitudinal axis of the pod is substantially perpendicular to the pivot axis when the pod is received in the receptacle.

4. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the machine is configured such that a longitudinal axis of the paddle is stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position when the pod is received in the receptacle.

5. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the machine comprises one or more protrusions operable to contact and penetrate a surface of the pod.

6. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the housing defines a dispensing area with a tray shaped and sized to receive a container sized for consuming the produced single serving of the frozen confection.

7. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the cooling assembly comprises one or more thermo-electric cooling elements.

8. The machine of claim 1 , further comprising an air delivery assembly comprising an air pump operable to pump air into the ingredients to produce overrun when the ingredients are received in the receptacle.

9. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the cooling assembly is operable to freeze the ingredients within 2 minutes.

10. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the frozen confection is ice cream or frozen yogurt.

11. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the substantially empty pod is removable from the receptacle when the lid is in the open position.

12. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the display is attached to a substantially flat surface of the housing and is substantially centered on the housing with respect to the receptacle and the lid.

13. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the pod comprises a cap extending across a top portion of the pod for covering the interior of the pod.

14. The machine of claim 13 , wherein the machine is operable to penetrate the cap while the cap is on the pod.

15. The machine of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the pod is formed of a plastic material.

16. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the bottom surface of the pod is circular and extends diametrically across a bottom portion of the pod.

17. A machine for providing a single serving of a frozen confection, the machine comprising:

a housing;

a lid movably attached to the housing and configured to move between an open position in which a receptacle sized to receive a single-use, disposable pod is exposed and a closed position in which the receptacle is inaccessible, the pod having a bottom surface and a sidewall extending from the bottom surface, the bottom surface and the sidewall defining an interior of the pod, the interior of the pod being at least partially pre-filled with ingredients for producing the single serving of the frozen confection;

a cooling assembly sized to receive the ingredients and disposed within the housing such that a longitudinal axis of the cooling assembly is stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position, the cooling assembly operable to cool the ingredients to produce the single serving of the frozen confection;

a mixing motor operable to rotate a paddle to mix the ingredients to produce the single serving of the frozen confection from the ingredients; and

a dispensing opening sized to dispense the produced single serving of the frozen confection from the machine, located below the lid, and offset from the longitudinal axis of the cooling assembly,

wherein the machine is configured such that a new pod is used for each serving of the single serving of the frozen confection, and the pod is pre-filled with enough ingredients to provide the single serving of the frozen confection.

18. The machine of claim 17 , wherein the lid is pivotally attached to the housing, the lid pivoting about a pivot axis in moving between the open position and the closed position.

19. The machine of claim 18 , wherein the pivot axis is substantially horizontal such that a longitudinal axis of the pod is substantially perpendicular to the pivot axis when the pod is received in the receptacle.

20. The machine of claim 19 , wherein the machine is configured such that a longitudinal axis of the paddle is stationary relative to the housing as the lid is moved between the open position and the closed position when the pod is received in the receptacle.
