Abstract

A method of discontinuous reception (DRX) in a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) includes the WTRU receiving DRX setting information over a radio resource control (RRC) signal, and the WTRU receiving DRX activation information over medium access control (MAC) signal.

Claims (41)

1. A method implemented by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:

receiving discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration information in a radio resource control (RRC) message, the DRX configuration information comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle periodicity and an indication of a second DRX cycle periodicity;

receiving a first medium access control (MAC) message during a first DRX active period, the first MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using the first DRX cycle periodicity;

performing DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message;

receiving a second MAC message during a second DRX active period, the second MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using the second DRX cycle periodicity; and

performing DRX in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first DRX cycle periodicity is associated with a first DRX profile, the DRX configuration information indicates a first DRX profile ID associated with the first DRX profile, the second DRX cycle periodicity is associated with a second DRX profile, and the DRX configuration information indicates a second DRX profile ID associated with the second DRX profile.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first MAC message indicates the first DRX profile ID, and the second MAC message indicates the second DRX profile ID.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message comprises entering a sleep period of a DRX cycle in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein performing DRX in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message comprises entering a sleep period of a DRX cycle in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DRX configuration information comprises an indication of a DRX minimum active period.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the DRX minimum active period comprises a period that the WTRU is in an active state at a beginning of a DRX cycle even if no transmissions are sent to the WTRU.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first DRX cycle periodicity is shorter than the second DRX cycle periodicity.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DRX configuration information comprises an indication of a DRX active period start time.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a data indication signal during a minimum active period of a DRX cycle;

remaining awake beyond the minimum active period based on receiving the data indication signal;

receiving downlink data after remaining awake beyond the minimum active period; and

resuming DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity on condition that the first MAC message is received or in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity on condition that the second MAC message is received.

11. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising a processor and memory, the processor and memory configured to:

receive discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration information in a radio resource control (RRC) message, the DRX configuration information comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle periodicity and indication of a second DRX cycle periodicity;

receive a first medium access control (MAC) message during a first DRX active period, the first MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using first DRX cycle periodicity;

perform DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message;

receive a second MAC message during a second DRX active period, the second MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using the second DRX cycle periodicity; and

perform DRX in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message.

The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the first DRX cycle periodicity is associated with a first DRX profile, the DRX configuration information indicates a first DRX profile ID associated with the first DRX profile, the second DRX cycle periodicity is associated with a second DRX profile, and the DRX configuration information indicates a second DRX profile ID associated with the second DRX profile.

The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the processor and memory being configured to perform DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message comprises the processor and memory being configured to enter a sleep period of a DRX cycle in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the first MAC message.

The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein the processor and memory being configured to perform DRX in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message comprises the processor and memory being configured to enter a sleep period of a DRX cycle in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity based on receiving the second MAC message.

15. The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the DRX configuration information comprises an indication of a DRX minimum active period.

16. The WTRU of claim 15 , wherein the DRX minimum active period comprises a period that the WTRU is in an active state at a beginning of a DRX cycle even if no transmissions are sent to the WTRU.

17. The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the first DRX cycle periodicity is shorter than the second DRX cycle periodicity.

18. The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the DRX configuration information comprises an indication of a DRX active period start time.

19. The WTRU of claim 11 , wherein the processor and memory are configured to:

receive a data indication signal during a minimum active period of a DRX cycle;

remain awake beyond the minimum active period based on receiving the data indication signal;

receive downlink data after remaining awake beyond the minimum active period; and

resume DRX in accordance with the first DRX cycle periodicity on condition that the first MAC message is received or in accordance with the second DRX cycle periodicity on condition that the second MAC message is received.

20. A base station comprising a processor and memory, the processor and memory configured to:

send a radio resource control (RRC) message to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the RRC message comprising discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration information, the DRX configuration information comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle periodicity and indication of a second DRX cycle periodicity;

send a first medium access control (MAC) message to the WTRU when the WTRU is in a first DRX active period, the first MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using the first DRX cycle periodicity; and

send a second MAC message to the WTRU when the WTRU is in a second DRX active period, the second MAC message indicating that the WTRU is to resume DRX using the second DRX cycle periodicity.
