Abstract

A percussive therapy system includes a percussive therapy device that includes a housing, an electrical source, a motor positioned in the housing, a switch for activating the motor, a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor, and an attachment configured to be operatively connected to a distal end of the push rod assembly of the percussive massage device and to provide at least one therapeutic effect to a user. The attachment may include at least one of an actuator configured to provide the at least one therapeutic effect to the user and a sensor configured to obtain at least one of biometric data of the user and information regarding operation of the percussive therapy device.

Claims (37)

1. A percussive therapy system comprising:

a percussive therapy device comprising:

a housing that includes a handle portion defining a handle portion axis;

a motor positioned in the housing and configured to output torque about a motor axis;

an eccentric shaft configured to travel in a circle about the motor axis in response to activation of the motor, and

a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor, wherein a distal end of the push rod assembly comprises a connector configured to travel along a reciprocation axis when the push rod assembly reciprocates, the handle portion axis and the reciprocation axis both lie on a common plane normal to the motor axis, a proximal end of the push rod assembly is connected to the eccentric shaft at a location offset from the common plane in a first direction, and the motor extends away from the common plane in a second direction oppostie the first direction; and

an attachment configured to be operatively connected to the connector of the percussive therapy device.

2. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the percussive therapy device comprises a bearing between the eccentric shaft and the push rod assembly, the bearing being offset from the common plane in the first direction.

3. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the handle portion axis intersects the reciprocation axis, and the handle potion axis extends longitudinally away from the reciprocation axis.

4. The percussive therapy system of claim 3 , wherein the attachment comprises a heating element.

5. The percussive therapy system of claim 4 , wherein the attachment comprises a termperature sensor.

6. The percussive therapy system of claim 5 , wherein the attachment includes a first set of electrical contacts and the connector includes a second set of electrical contacts configured to electrically connect to the first set of electrical contacts when the attachment is operatively connected to the connector.

7. The percussive therapy system of claim 3 , wherein the percussive therapy system is configured to determine whether the attachment includes a heating element and a temnperature sensor.

8. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a switch for activating the motor, and the switch is located on a portion of the housing that faces an opposite direction from the distal end of the push rod assembly.

9. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a switch and an electronic display that faces a same direction as the switch, wherein the switch is configured for activating the motor.

10. the percussive therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the common plane bisects the housing.

11. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , comprising a battery housed in the handle portion.

12. A percussive therapy device comprising:

a handle portion that defines a handle portion axis;

a motor configured to output torque about a motor axis that is perpendicular to the handle portion axis; and

a push rod assembly comprising:

an output shaft configured to reciprocate along a reciprocation axis in response to activation of the motor and having a distal end that comprises a connector for an attachment, wherein the output shaft is centered on the reciprocation axis and the reciprocation axis extends on a reciprocation plane; and

a push rod having a proximal end operatively connected to the motor and a distal end connected to the output shaft, wherein the proximal end of the push rod is farther from the reciprocation plane than the distal end of the push rod,

wherein the reciprocation plane is normal to the motor axis.

13. The percussive therapy device of claim 12 , comprising a backward facing electronic display and a backward facing switch configured to activate the motor.

14. The percussive therapy device of claim 12 , wherein:

the motor is located on a first side of the reciprocation plane;

the device includes an eccentric shaft that is configured to travel in a circle about the motor axis when the motor is active; and

a proximal end of the push rod assembly is connected to the eccentric shaft on a second side of the reciprocation plane that is opposite from the first side of the reciprocation plane.

15. The percussive therapy device of claim 14 , comprising a housing that enclosed the motor, includes the handle portion, and is bisected by the reciprocation plane.

16. The percussive therapy device of claim 15 , wherein the handle portion axis lies on the reciprocation plane.

17. The percussive therapy device of claim 14 , wherein the handle portion axis extends longitudinally away from the reciprocation axis.

18. A therapeutic assembly comprising:

the percussive therapy device of claim 17 , wherein the connector includes electrical contacts configured to power an actuator of the attachment when the attachment is engaged to the connector; and

the attachment, wherein the attachment includes either or both of a heating actuator and a cooling actuator.

19. The therapeutic assembly of claim 18 , wherein the attachment includes the cooling actuator, and the angle of the output shaft is fixed relative to the angle of the handle portion so that the handle portioin axis is fixed relative to the reciprocation axis.

20. The percussive therapy device of claim 17 , wherein the connector includes electrical contacts configured to establish a data connection between the attachment and the device when the attacment is engaged to the connector.
