Abstract

Electrodes and methods of forming electrodes are described herein. The electrode can be an electrode of an electrochemical cell or battery. The electrode includes a current collector and a film in electrical communication with the current collector. The film may include a carbon phase that holds the film together. The electrode further includes an electrode attachment substance that adheres the film to the current collector.

Claims (21)

1 . An electrochemical cell comprising:

an electrode comprising an active material; and

a pyrolyzed carbon phase to hold the active material together.

2 . The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , further comprising a cell attachment substance, wherein an amount of pyrolyzed carbon in the cell attachment substance includes about 10% to about 25% by weight.

3 . The electrochemical cell of claim 2 , wherein the pyrolyzed carbon reacts with the one or more additives to create a material at interfaces of the electrode.

4 . The electrochemical cell of claim 2 , wherein the electrode comprises surfaces that are substantially free of the cell attachment substance.

5 . The electrochemical cell of claim 2 , further comprising a separator adhered to the electrode by the cell attachment substance, wherein the separator or the cell attachment substance comprises porosity.

6 . The electrochemical cell of claim 2 , wherein the cell attachment substance further comprises one or more conductive particles.

7 . The electrochemical cell of claim 6 , wherein the one or more conductive particles are formed of metals or alloys including copper, nickel, or stainless steel.

8 . The electrochemical cell of claim 13 , wherein the one or more conductive particles are formed of conductive carbon including carbon blacks, carbon fibers, carbon nanofibers, or carbon nanotubes.

9 . An electrochemical cell comprising:

an electrode; and

an active material and a carbon phase to hold the active material together, the carbon phase comprising pyrolyzed carbon, wherein the active material comprises silicon particles distributed within and supported by the carbon phase.

10 . The electrochemical cell of claim 9 , further comprising a cell attachment substance to adhere the electrode to a separator, wherein the cell attachment substance further comprises one or more conductive particles.

11 . The electrochemical cell of claim 10 , wherein an amount of pyrolyzed carbon in the cell attachment substance includes about 10% to about 25% by weight.

12 . The electrochemical cell of claim 10 , wherein the one or more conductive particles are formed of metals or alloys including copper, nickel, or stainless steel.

13 . The electrochemical cell of claim 10 , wherein the one or more conductive particles are formed of conductive carbon including carbon blacks, carbon fibers, carbon nanofibers, or carbon nanotubes.

14 . The electrochemical cell of claim 9 , wherein the active material can be cast onto a copper substrate to form a coating on the copper substrate.

15 . The electrochemical cell of claim 9 , wherein the pyrolyzed carbon reacts with the one or more additives to create a material at interfaces of the electrode.

16 . The electrochemical cell of claim 9 , wherein the pyrolyzed carbon replaces a polymer precursor in the electrode.

17 . The electrochemical cell of claim 16 , wherein trace amounts of the polymer precursor exist in the electrode.
