Abstract

A video game system includes a video server system (VSS) having a first network address. The VSS pairs a game controller having a second network address with a display system having a third network address. The VSS receives controller data packets directed to the first network address from the game controller over a first communication channel. The controller data packets include the second network address and information for updating a game state of a video game. The VSS decodes the controller data packets and directs generation of an updated game state of the video game using information within the controller data packets. The VSS generates a video stream of the video game using the updated game state. The VSS transmits the video stream to the display system at the third network address over a second communication channel. The first and second communication channels differ by at least one network segment.

Claims (31)

1. A device for controlling a video game, comprising:

a first logic configured to generate a digital representation of a game command;

a second logic configured to generate a digital data transmission that includes the digital representation of the game command; and

a third logic configured to wirelessly transmit the digital data transmission over a data communication network to a video game server operating to receive the digital data transmission and use the digital representation of the game command as input to a video game executed by the video game server, wherein said game command is for controlling interactivity of a player with the video game served remotely by the video game server to the player, wherein the device for controlling the video game is physically separate from the video game server that executes the video game, wherein the data communication network includes an Internet access routing device that is local to the device for controlling the video game.

2. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , wherein the data communication network includes a cellular network.

3. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , wherein the data communication network includes a WIFI network.

4. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , wherein the data communication network includes a satellite.

5. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second logic generates a data packet that includes the digital representation of the game command.

6. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 5 , wherein the data packet is addressed to the video game server.

7. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one control configured for manipulation by a game player to enter a game command.

8. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 7 , wherein the at least one control includes a touch sensitive surface.

9. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 7 , wherein the at least one control includes one or more of a button, a switch, a wheel, a trigger, a key, a pressure sensor, a nerve impulse detection electrode, a microphone, and a camera.

10. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one position determination device.

11. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 9 , wherein the at least one position determination device includes one or more of an accelerometer, a position sensor, a location sensor, a gyroscope, and a movement detector.

12. A device for controlling a video game 1 , comprising:

a first logic configured to generate a digital representation of a game command;

a second logic configured to generate a digital data transmission that includes the digital representation of the game command; and

a third logic configured to wirelessly transmit the digital data transmission over a data communication network to a video game server operating to receive the digital data transmission and use the digital representation of the game command as input to a video game executed by the video game server, wherein said game command is for controlling interactivity of a player with the video game served remotely by the video game server to the player, wherein the device for controlling the video game is physically separate from the video game server that executes the video game, wherein the digital data transmission is not processed by a local computer before being wirelessly transmitted by the third logic, wherein said local computer is physically separate from the device for controlling the video game.

13. A device for controlling a video game, comprising:

a first logic configured to generate a digital representation of a game command;

a second logic configured to generate a digital data transmission that includes the digital representation of the game command; and

a third logic configured to wirelessly transmit the digital data transmission over a data communication network to a video game server operating to receive the digital data transmission and use the digital representation of the game command as input to a video game executed by the video game server, wherein said game command is for controlling interactivity of a player with the video game served remotely by the video game server to the player, wherein the device for controlling the video game is physically separate from the video game server that executes the video game, wherein the third logic is configured to wirelessly transmit the digital data transmission through a first communication channel over the data communication network, wherein the first communication channel is separate from a second communication channel over which a video stream of the video game is transmitted for the player associated with the device for controlling the video game.

14. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 13 , wherein the device for controlling the video game is physically separate from a display device that is connected to the second communication channel.

15. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

a fourth logic configured to wirelessly receive and process an incoming digital data transmission.

16. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 15 , wherein the incoming digital data transmission is from the video game server.

17. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 15 , wherein the incoming digital data transmission is from a computing device that is not the video game server.

18. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 15 , wherein the incoming digital data transmission conveys information about a state of the video game associated with the player of the video game.

19. The device for controlling the video game as recited in claim 15 , wherein the incoming digital data transmission conveys information from another player of the video game.
