Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure involve systems, methods, and devices for mitigating Lidar cross-talk. Consistent with some embodiments, a Lidar system is configured to include one or more noise source detectors that detect noise signals that may produce noise in return signals received at the Lidar system. A noise source detector comprises a light sensor to receive a noise signal produced by a noise source and a timing circuit to provide a timing signal indicative of a direction of the noise source relative to an autonomous vehicle on which the Lidar system is mounted. A noise source may be an external Lidar system or a surface in the surrounding environment that is reflecting light signals such as those emitted by an external Lidar system.

Claims (40)

1. A Lidar system comprising:

a plurality of channels respectively configured to provide ranging information, at least one channel of the plurality of channels comprising:

an emitter paired with a receiver, the emitter configured to emit one or more signals into a surrounding environment, the receiver configured to receive a return signal corresponding to a reflection of the one or more signals off the surrounding environment;

a first timing circuit configured to measure a time of flight of the return signal, and

a noise source detector configured to detect a noise signal associated with the return signal, the noise source detector comprising:

a sensor configured to receive the noise signal, and

a second timing circuit configured to generate data indicative of a direction of a noise source associated with the noise signal.

2. The Lidar system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of channels and the sensor are rotatable around an axis of the Lidar system, and wherein the data indicative of the direction of the noise source is based on a position of the sensor within a spin cycle around the axis.

3. The Lidar system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is tuned to a wavelength of at least one of the plurality of channels.

4. The Lidar system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more signals represent one or more light beams.

5. The Lidar system of claim 4 , wherein the sensor is configured to measure an intensity of the noise signal produced by the noise source.

6. The Lidar system of claim 1 , wherein the noise source comprises another sensor or a surface reflecting a signal produced by the other sensor.

7. The Lidar system of claim 6 , wherein the other sensor is associated with a vehicle.

8. A vehicle computing system comprising:

a Lidar system, the Lidar system comprising:

a plurality of channels respectively configured to provide ranging information for a vehicle, at least one channel of the plurality of channels comprising:

an emitter paired with a receiver, the emitter configured to emit one or more signals into a surrounding environment, the receiver configured to receive a return signal corresponding to a reflection of the one or more signals off the surrounding environment;

a first timing circuit configured to measure a time of flight of the return signal, and

a noise source detector to detect a noise signal in the return signal, the noise source detector comprising:

a sensor configured to receive the noise signal, and

a second timing circuit configured to generate data indicative of a direction of a noise source associated with the noise signal.

9. The vehicle computing system of claim 8 , wherein the first timing circuit operates at a first level of precision and the second timing circuit operates at a second level of precision different from the first level of precision.
