Abstract

An electric drive axle in a vehicle is provided. The electric drive axle includes, in one example, a housing configured to enclose an electric motor-generator and a gearbox. In the electric drive axle, the housing includes a first section that is removably coupled to a second section, the second section at least partially encloses the gearbox, the first section includes a first axle shaft opening, and the second section includes a second axle shaft opening that is laterally aligned with the first axle shaft opening.

Claims (53)

1. An electric drive axle comprising:

a housing with two axle shaft openings;

two axle shafts each of which extend through one of the two axle shaft openings;

wherein the housing includes:

a housing body that at least partially encloses an electric motor, a gearbox, and a differential;

a first access panel removably attached to a first flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to the differential; and

a second access panel removably attached to a second flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to at least one of the gearbox and the electric motor; and

two wheel bearing assemblies each of which are coupled to one of the two axle shafts; and

multiple suspension mounting interfaces;

wherein each of the multiple suspension mounting interfaces is positioned between one of the two axle shaft openings and one of the two wheel bearing assemblies;

wherein the housing body includes a plurality of reinforcing ribs that laterally extend across an outer surface of the housing body;

wherein the plurality of reinforcing ribs are positioned on a top side of the housing body; and

wherein the first access panel is arranged at a non-parallel angle in relation to the second access panel.

2. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of at least one of the plurality of reinforcing ribs is position above at least one of the two axle shaft openings.

3. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of reinforcing ribs are parallel to one another.

4. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , further comprising an inverter electrically coupled to the electric motor.

5. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein a rotational axis of the electric motor is parallel to rotational axes of the two axle shafts.

6. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein the housing is not directly mounted to a vehicle frame.

7. The electric drive axle of claim 6 , wherein the electric drive axle forms an unsprung portion of a vehicle.

8. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein the first access panel and the electric motor are positioned on opposing longitudinal sides of the electric drive axle.

9. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein the first access panel is positioned laterally between two of the multiple suspension mounting interfaces.

10. The electric drive axle of claim 1 , wherein the electric drive axle is an electric beam axle.

11. A non-steerable electric beam axle comprising:

a housing with two axle shaft openings;

two axle shafts each of which extend through one of the two axle shaft openings;

wherein the housing includes:

a housing body that at least partially encloses one or more of an electric motor, a gearbox, and a differential;

a first access panel removably attached to a first flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to the differential; and

a second access panel removably attached to a second flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to at least one of the gearbox and the electric motor;

wherein the first access panel and the second access panel are positioned on opposing longitudinal sides of the non-steerable electric beam axle;

wherein the housing body includes a plurality of reinforcing ribs that laterally extend across an outer surface of the housing body;

wherein a rotational axis of the electric motor is parallel to rotational axes of the two axle shafts; and

wherein the first access panel is arranged at a non-parallel angle in relation to the second access panel.

12. The non-steerable electric beam axle of claim 11 , further comprising an electrical interface that is electrically coupled to the electric motor.

13. The non-steerable electric beam axle of claim 11 , further comprising two wheel bearing assemblies each of which are coupled to one of the two axle shafts.

14. The non-steerable electric beam axle of claim 11 , further comprising multiple suspension mounting interfaces positioned between the corresponding axle shaft opening and the corresponding wheel bearing assembly.

15. The non-steerable electric beam axle of claim 11 , wherein the first access panel has an asymmetric profile about a vertical axis.

16. A non-steerable electric axle comprising:

a housing with two axle shaft openings;

two axle shafts each of which extend through one of the two axle shaft openings;

wherein the housing includes:

a housing body that at least partially encloses one or more of an electric motor, a gearbox, and a differential;

a first access panel removably attached to a first flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to the differential; and

a second access panel removably attached to a second flange of the housing body via a plurality of attachment devices and providing access to at least one of the gearbox and the electric motor;

wherein the first access panel and the second access panel are positioned on opposing longitudinal sides of the non-steerable electric axle;

wherein the housing body includes a plurality of reinforcing ribs that laterally extend across an outer surface of the housing body on an upper side of the housing;

wherein the plurality of reinforcing ribs have a varying height;

wherein a rotational axis of the electric motor is parallel to rotational axes of the two axle shafts; and

wherein the first access panel is arranged at a non-parallel angle in relation to the second access panel.

17. The non-steerable electric axle of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of attachment devices corresponding to the first access panel and the second access panel are bolts.

18. The non-steerable electric axle of claim 16 , further comprising multiple suspension mounting interfaces each of which is configured to attach to a shock absorber and/or a strut.

19. The non-steerable electric axle of claim 18 , wherein each of the multiple suspension mounting interfaces is positioned laterally between one of the two axle shaft openings and a wheel bearing assembly.

20. The non-steerable electric axle of claim 16 , further comprising an inverter electrically coupled to the electric motor.
