Abstract

Surgical tools that can be used in single port laparoscopic procedures can include a low-profile handle assembly to minimize tool interference adjacent the incision site. For example, a handle assembly for a surgical instrument can have a generally in-line configuration extending linearly along a central longitudinal axis of an elongate shaft of the instrument. A linkage mechanism including a trigger, an actuation link, and an actuation shaft can be positioned within the in-line handle. The linkage mechanism can be pivoted between an open position in which end effectors of the instrument are open and a toggle position in which the end effectors are locked closed. A locking mechanism such as a ratchet mechanism can also be used to lock the end effectors. A surgical dissector can include gripping jaws having a curved profile or an angled elongate shaft to minimize tool interference and maximize visibility within a procedure site.

Claims (28)

1 . A surgical instrument comprising:

a handle assembly having a proximal end and a distal end;

an elongate shaft extending from the distal end of the handle assembly along a central longitudinal axis, the elongate shaft having a distal end opposite the handle assembly; and

an end effector assembly disposed at the distal end of the elongate shaft;

wherein the handle assembly has an in-line configuration extending generally linearly from the proximal end to the distal end thereof; and wherein the handle assembly further comprises:

a handle body; and

a linkage mechanism operable between an open position in which the end effector assembly is in an open state and a toggle position in which the end effector is locked in a closed state, the linkage mechanism comprising

an actuation link having a first end and a second end opposite the first end, extending generally proximally from the first end to the second end within the handle body, the first end positioned on a first side of the central longitudinal axis with the linkage mechanism in the open position and moved across the central longitudinal axis opposite the first side with the linkage mechanism in the toggle position; and

a trigger pivotably coupled to the distal end of the handle body and pivotably coupled to the first end of the actuation link.

2 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the trigger is operable to open and close the end effector and to lock the end effector in the closed state.

3 . The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the trigger is pivotable relative to the handle body between a first position corresponding to the open position of the linkage mechanism and a second position corresponding to the toggle position of the linkage mechanism.

The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the linkage mechanism further comprises an actuation shaft pivotably coupled to the actuation link at the second end of the actuation link, the actuation shaft longitudinally slidable responsive to movement of the first end of the actuation link between the open position of the linkage mechanism and the toggle position of the linkage mechanism.

5 . A surgical instrument comprising:

a handle assembly having a proximal end and a distal end;

an elongate shaft extending from the distal end of the handle assembly along a central longitudinal axis, the elongate shaft having a distal end opposite the handle assembly; and

an end effector assembly disposed at the distal end of the elongate shaft;

wherein the handle assembly has an in-line configuration extending generally linearly from the proximal end to the distal end thereof; and wherein the handle assembly further comprises:

a handle body; and

a linkage mechanism comprising:

a trigger pivotably coupled to the handle body;

an actuation link pivotably coupled to the trigger and extending generally proximally within the handle body;

an actuation shaft coupled to the actuation link and longitudinally slidable with respect to the elongate shaft responsive to pivotal movement of the trigger; and

a spring positioned between the actuation shaft and the actuation link.

6 . The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the trigger is pivotable between an open position in which the end effector assembly is in an open state, and a toggle position in which the end effector assembly is locked in a closed state.

7 . The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the spring is compressed with the trigger in the toggle position.

8 . The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the spring is configured to limit force applied to the end effector assembly.

The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the actuation link comprises a first end pivotably coupled to the trigger, the first end positioned on a first side of the central longitudinal axis with the trigger in the open position and moved across the central longitudinal axis opposite the first side with the trigger in the toggle position.

10 . The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the spring is compressed as the first end of the actuation link is moved across the central longitudinal axis opposite the first side.
