Abstract

A method and apparatus for treating a clot in the blood vessel of a patient, and particularly the treatment of a pulmonary embolism is disclosed. The treatment includes restoring flow through the clot followed by clot removal, either partially or substantially completely. The clot treatment device is expandable into the blood vessel and may contain radial extensions that assist in restoring flow as well as in removing clot material.

Claims (29)

1 . A method of treating clot material at least partially restricting blood flow through a blood vessel, the method comprising:

advancing a clot treatment device to the clot material in the blood vessel;

expanding the clot treatment device within the blood vessel such that at least a portion of the clot treatment device expands distal to the clot material within the blood vessel; and

retracting the clot treatment device at least partially through the clot material such that at least a portion of the clot material is captured by the clot treatment device, wherein retracting the clot treatment device includes allowing the clot treatment device to elongate.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the clot treatment device includes expanding a plurality of radially-extending portions of the clot treatment device such that at least one of the of radially-extending portions is expanded distal to the clot material.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the clot treatment device includes allowing the clot treatment device to self expand.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the clot treatment device includes expanding the clot treatment device to include a plurality of radially-extending portions and at least one cylindrical portion between a pair of the radially-extending portions.

5 . The method of claim 4 wherein the radially-extending portions have a linear-triangular cross-sectional shape.

6 . The method of claim 4 wherein the radially-extending portions have a first length along a longitudinal axis of the clot treatment device, and wherein the cylindrical portion has a second length along the longitudinal axis of the clot treatment device that is greater than the first length.

7 . The method of claim 4 wherein the clot treatment device is a braid.

8 . The method of claim 4 wherein the clot treatment device is a balloon.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein the clot treatment device is coupled to a wire.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein advancing the clot treatment device includes advancing the clot treatment device through a guide catheter, and wherein the method further comprises applying a vacuum through the guide catheter to aspirate at least a portion of the clot material into the guide catheter.

11 . The method of claim 1 wherein applying the vacuum includes activating a syringe in fluid communication with the guide catheter.

12 . The method of claim 11 wherein advancing the clot treatment device includes advancing the clot treatment device through a guide catheter, and wherein the method further comprises:

expanding a guide member coupled to a distal end portion of the guide catheter; and

retracting the clot treatment device through the guide member into the guide catheter.

13 . The method of claim 12 wherein expanding the guide member includes expanding the guide member into apposition with a wall of the blood vessel to block blood flow past the guide member.

14 . The method of claim 12 wherein the guide member is a balloon.

15 . The method of claim 12 wherein the guide member has a tapered or funnel shape for guiding the clot material into a distal opening in the guide catheter.

16 . A method of treating clot material at least partially restricting blood flow through a blood vessel, the method comprising:

advancing a clot treatment device through a lumen of a delivery catheter to the clot material in the blood vessel;

activating a syringe in fluid communication with the lumen of the delivery catheter to apply a vacuum to the lumen of the delivery catheter to aspirate at least a portion of the clot material into the lumen;

expanding the clot treatment device within the blood vessel such that the clot treatment device includes a plurality of radially-extending portions and at least one cylindrical portion between a pair of the radially-extending portions, wherein the radially-extending portions have a greater diameter than the cylindrical portion, and wherein the radially-extending portions have a length along a longitudinal axis of the clot treatment device that is different than a length of the cylindrical portion; and

retracting the clot treatment device at least partially through the clot material such that at least a portion of the clot material is captured by the clot treatment device.

17 . The method of claim 16 wherein retracting the clot treatment device includes allowing the clot treatment device to elongate.

18 . The method of claim 16 wherein the radially-extending portions have a linear-triangular cross-sectional shape.

19 . The method of claim 18 wherein the clot treatment device is a balloon.

20 . The method of claim 16 wherein retracting the clot treatment device includes pulling a wire coupled to the clot treatment device.
