Abstract

Cochlear implant systems can comprise an implantable subsystem comprising a cochlear electrode, a stimulator, a battery, and a first near field communication interface positioned subcutaneously proximate an ear canal. Cochlear implant systems can further comprise a removable earplug comprising a sensor, a second near field communication interface, and a signal processor. The removable earplug can be inserted into an ear canal to align the first and second near field communication interfaces. Once aligned, the battery can provide electrical power to the removable earplug via the near field communication interfaces. The signal processor can receive input signals from the sensor of the removable earplug and generate a stimulation signal representative of the auditory signals. The signal processor can communicate the stimulation signal to the stimulator via the near field communication interfaces.

Claims (45)

1 . A cochlear implant system comprising:

an implantable subsystem comprising:

a cochlear electrode,

a stimulator in electrical communication with the cochlear electrode,

a rechargeable energy storage device in electrical communication with the stimulator; and

a first near field communication interface in electrical communication with the rechargeable energy storage device and configured to be subcutaneously implantable proximate an ear canal, wherein the first near field communication interface is configured for transcutaneous transmission of electrical power to an area proximate the ear canal; and

a removable earplug configured to be inserted into the ear canal, the removable earplug comprising:

a sensor configured to sense auditory signals and generate an input signal representative of the sensed auditory signals; and

a signal processor configured to receive the input signal from the sensor, generate a stimulation signal based on the received input signal, and output the stimulation signal to the implantable subsystem.

2 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , wherein the removable earplug further comprises

a second near field communication interface; and wherein

the removable earplug is configured such that positioning the second near field communication interface proximate the first near field communication interface, (i) a communication link is established between the first near field communication interface and the second near field communication interface, and (ii) the rechargeable energy storage device provides electrical power to the removable earplug through the communication link.

3 . The cochlear implant system of claim 2 , wherein

alignment of the first and second near field communication interfaces causes the signal processor to output the stimulation signal to the implantable subsystem.

4 . The cochlear implant system of claim 2 , wherein:

the signal processor is a first signal processor;

the implantable subsystem further comprises a second signal processor in communication with the first signal processor via the communication link;

the first signal processor is configured to output the stimulation signal to the second signal processor via the communication link; and

the second signal processor is configured to:

generate a modified stimulation signal; and

output the modified stimulation signal to the stimulator.

5 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , wherein the implantable subsystem includes an implantable signal processor configured to receive one or more signals from the removable earplug.

6 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , further comprising an implantable charging coil in electrical communication with the rechargeable energy storage device and configured to receive electrical energy from an external device and provide electrical charge to the rechargeable energy storage device.

7 . The cochlear implant system of claim 6 , wherein the implantable charging coil is configured to be implanted subcutaneously in a pectoral region of a wearer.

8 . The cochlear implant system of claim 6 , wherein the rechargeable energy storage device comprises a capacity ranging from approximately 3 Watt-hours to 4 Watt-hours.

9 . The cochlear implant system of claim 8 , wherein the capacity of the rechargeable energy storage device comprises 3.7 Watt-hours.

10 . The cochlear implant system of claim 6 , wherein the implantable subsystem comprises a biocompatible housing and the implantable charging coil comprises a biocompatible material.

11 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable energy storage device is configured to be implanted subcutaneously in a pectoral region of a wearer.

12 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable energy storage device comprises a capacity of 100 milliamp-hours.

13 . The cochlear implant system of claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable energy storage device comprises a biocompatible housing.

14 . A cochlear implant system, comprising:

an implantable subsystem comprising:

a cochlear electrode;

a stimulator in electrical communication with the cochlear electrode;

a battery in electrical communication with the stimulator;

a first coil configured to be subcutaneously implantable proximate an ear canal; and

a charging coil; and

a removable earplug configured to be inserted into an ear canal of a user, the removable earplug comprising:

a sensor configured to sense auditory signals and generate an input signal representative of the sensed auditory signals;

a second coil; and

a signal processor in electrical communication with the sensor and the second coil, the signal processor configured to receive the input signal from the sensor and generate a stimulation signal based on the received input signal;

wherein the first coil and the charging coil are configured for transcutaneous wireless communication.

15 . The cochlear implant system of claim 14 ,

wherein the system is configured such that, when the second coil is positioned proximate the first coil, (i) a communication link is established between the first coil and the second coil, and (ii) the battery provides electrical power to the removable earplug through the communication link.

16 . The cochlear implant system of claim 14 , wherein the implantable subsystem further comprises an implantable signal processor is configured to be subcutaneously implantable in a wearer.
