Abstract

One or more embodiments of the present disclosure describe an RFID-enabled roofing accessory. The roofing accessory may include a roofing shingle, such as an asphalt roofing shingle. The roofing accessory may include an RFID tag incorporated thereon. The RFID tag may be adhered to the roofing accessories.

Claims (38)

1. A roofing shingle, comprising:

an asphalt roofing shingle;

wherein the asphalt shingle is installed at a configurable location on a roof; and

a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag configured to emit radio-frequency signals having a signal power sufficient to penetrate the roofing shingle so as to enable an RFID reader device to communicate with the RFID tag through the roofing shingle;

wherein the RFID tag is adhered to the roofing shingle, the roofing shingle being configured to be installed on a roof;

wherein the RFID tag is configured to be read, using the RFID reader device, to initialize the RFID tag, comprising:

generating at least one reader RF signal at one or more frequencies to read the RFID tag;

detecting at least one return RF signal from the RFID tag;

wherein the at least one return RF signal carries tag data comprising at least one tag identifier; and

wherein the RFID reader device is configured to record in a database the configurable location on the roof based at least in part on the at least one return RF signal, wherein the configurable location is recorded in associated with the at least one tag identifier.

2. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is adhered to a surface on an underside of the asphalt roofing shingle.

3. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tag identifier is associated with a location of the roofing shingle.

4. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to be read, using an RFID reader device.

5. The roofing shingle of claim 4 , wherein the RFID reader device is an active RFID reader device.

6. The roofing shingle of claim 4 , wherein the RFID reader device is a passive RFID reader device.

7. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is an active tag.

8. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is a passive tag.

9. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag comprises a near-field communication (NFC) tag.

10. A roofing system, comprising:

a plurality of shingles comprising at least one active roofing shingle and at least one dummy roofing shingle;

wherein the at least active roofing shingle comprises at least one RFID tag;

wherein the at least one RFID tag is adhered to the at least one active roofing shingle;

wherein the at least one dummy roofing shingle is without the at least one RFID tag; and

wherein the at least one active roofing shingle and the at least one dummy roofing shingle are arranged in a configurable pattern.

11. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one RFID tag is adhered to a surface on an underside of the at least one active roofing shingle.

12. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one active roofing shingle comprises at least one asphalt roofing shingle.

13. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one RFID tag is configured to emit at least one radio-frequency signals having a signal power sufficient to penetrate at least one of the at least one active roofing shingle or the at least one dummy roofing shingle so as to enable at least one RFID reader device to communicate with the at least one RFID tag through at least one of the at least one active roofing shingle or the at least one dummy roofing shingle.

14. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one RFID tag is configured to be read, using at least one RFID reader device.

15. The roofing system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one RFID reader device is at least one active RFID reader device.

16. The roofing system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one RFID reader device is at least one passive RFID reader device.

17. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one RFID tag is at least one active tag.

18. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one RFID tag is at least one passive tag.

19. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the RFID tag comprises a near-field communication (NFC) tag.

20. The roofing system of claim 10 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to be read, using an RFID reader device, to initialize the RFID tag, comprising:

generating at least one reader RF signal at one or more frequencies to read the RFID tag;

detecting at least one return RF signal from the RFID tag;

wherein the at least one return RF signal carries tag data comprising at least one tag identifier; and

wherein the at least one tag identifier is associated with a location of the roofing shingle.
