Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a system for indicating a program boundary in an adaptive bitrate media stream, where the system includes a memory and a processor that performs operations including generating multiple transcoded media output streams of different bit rates from an input linear media stream, fragmenting the multiple transcoded media output streams into chunks, detecting a program boundary in the input linear media stream, and supplying a program change indicator in a manifest file for implementing program change features in mobile communication devices. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (22)

1. A system to deliver media content comprising:

a transcoder including first machine readable instructions and a first processor, the first processor configured to execute the first machine readable instructions to:

generate multiple transcoded media output streams from an input linear media stream, the transcoded media output streams of the multiple transcoded media output streams having different bit rates;

fragment the multiple transcoded media output streams into chunks, the chunks to include respective display times;

identify a program boundary within a particular chunk of the chunks, wherein the program boundary includes a boundary between a first program and a second program;

subdivide the particular chunk into a first chunk and a second chunk based on the identifying the program boundary within the particular chunk; and

insert a description of the program boundary into a metadata file; and

a media player including second machine readable instructions and a second processor, the second processor configured to execute the second machine readable instructions to:

render media segments based on the chunks; and

apply content restriction to one or more media segments based on the metadata file.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder further includes a plurality of processors operating in a distributed processing environment.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder is configured to fragment the particular chunk at the program boundary into the first chunk and the second chunk.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder is configured to reduce, within the metadata file:

a first value corresponding to the first chunk to equal an amount of time from a beginning of the particular chunk to the program boundary; and

a second value corresponding to the second chunk to equal an amount of time from the program boundary to an end of the particular chunk.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the transcoder is configured to:

attribute the first value corresponding to the first chunk to a sponsorship of the first program; and

attribute the second value corresponding to the second chunk to a sponsorship of the second program.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata file is a manifest file in a multimedia playlist (m3u) format.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder is configured to send the metadata file to the media player.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the metadata file includes a timestamp that matches a scheduled time of the program boundary.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder is configured to store the chunks and the metadata file in a content delivery network.
