Abstract

An implant for insertion into a disc space between vertebrae, wherein the implant includes a spacer portion, a plate portion coupled to the spacer portion, two bone fixation elements for engaging the vertebrae and a retention mechanism for preventing the bone fixation elements from postoperatively backing-out of the plate portion. The retention mechanism may be in the form of a spring biased snapper element that is biased into communication with the bone fixation elements so that once the bone fixation element advances past the snapper element, the snapper element is biased back to its initial position in which the snapper element interfaces with the bone fixation elements. Alternatively, the retention mechanism may be in the form of a propeller rotatable between a first position in which the bone fixation elements are insertable to a second position where the bone fixation elements are prevented from backing-out.

Claims (38)

1. A method for inserting an intervertebral implant into an intervertebral disc space between superior and inferior vertebral bodies, the method comprising the steps of:

inserting the intervertebral implant into the intervertebral disc space, the intervertebral implant including a spacer portion and a plate portion coupled to the spacer portion;

driving first and second bone fixation elements along respective first and second insertion directions through first and second bone fixation holes, respectively, of the plate portion and into the superior and inferior, respectively, vertebral bodies; and

preventing the first bone fixation element from backing out of the first bone fixation hole along a first back-out direction that is opposite the first insertion direction, wherein the preventing step comprises aligning a flat inner surface of a first spring biased snapper element with the first bone fixation element along the first back-out direction,

wherein the first spring biased snapper element has a tapered outer surface opposite the flat inner surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of coupling the spacer portion to the plate portion prior to the inserting step.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting step is performed until a stop abuts one of the superior and inferior vertebral bodies.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of preventing the second bone fixation element from backing out of the second bone fixation hole along a second back-out direction that is opposite the second insertion direction, wherein the step of preventing the second bone fixation element from backing out comprises aligning a second flat inner surface of a second spring biased snapper element with the second bone fixation element along the second back-out direction.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aligning step is provided by a spring member that is separate from the first spring biased snapper element, and urges the first spring biased snapper element to a position whereby the flat inner surface is aligned with the first bone fixation element along the first back-out direction.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the spring member comprises a coil spring.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spacer portion further includes a centralized region comprising a first material concentrically surrounded by a portion comprising a second material that is different from the first material.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first material is more porous than the second material.

9. A method for inserting an implant into an intervertebral space, the method comprising the steps of:

inserting the implant into the intervertebral space, the implant including a plate portion and a spacer portion coupled to the plate portion, until a leading surface of a stop that protrudes from a top surface of the plate portion abuts a vertebral body; and

driving first and second bone fixation elements through first and second bone fixation holes, respectively, of the plate portion and into superior and inferior, respectively, vertebral bodies, wherein the first and second bone fixation holes are spaced from each other along a first direction, and the plate portion faces the spacer portion along a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction,

wherein the stop has a trailing surface opposite the leading surface, the trailing surface defines a trailing width measured along the first direction at a first location, the leading surface defines a leading width measured along the first direction at a second location that is aligned with the trailing location along the second direction, and the leading width is greater than the trailing width,

wherein the stop protrudes from a top surface of the plate portion along a third direction that is substantially perpendicular to each of the first and second directions, and

wherein the plate portion is devoid of a second stop that: 1) protrudes from the bottom surface, and 2) includes a second surface that is aligned with the first surface with respect to the third direction such that a straight line in the third direction intersects both the first surface and the second surface.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the stop abuts an anterior aspect of the vertebral body.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the step of coupling the spacer portion to the plate portion prior to the inserting step.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plate portion defines a leading surface that faces the spacer portion in the second direction, and a trailing surface opposite the leading surface, and the stop further comprises a first surface that faces the spacer portion in the second direction, wherein the first surface is: 1) between the leading surface and the trailing surface with respect to the second direction, and 2) offset from both the leading surface and the trailing surface with respect to the third direction.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the stop further including a second surface opposite the first surface, and the second surface is aligned with the first bone fixation hole along the third direction.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein a first location of the stop defines a first thickness measured along the second direction, a second location of the stop defines a second thickness measured along the second direction that is greater than the first thickness, and the first location is offset from the second location in the third direction.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the inserting step is performed until a second stop that protrudes from a bottom surface of the plate portion abuts a second vertebral body, wherein the stops are offset from each other along the second direction.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the second bone fixation hole is aligned with the second stop in the third direction.

17. An intervertebral implant comprising:

a spacer portion;

a plate portion coupled to the spacer portion, the plate portion includes:

a trailing surface that defines a first opening of a first bone fixation hole and a second opening of a bone fixation hole, the first opening spaced from the second opening in a first direction, wherein the first bone fixation hole is configured to receive a first bone fixation element such that the first bone fixation element secures the intervertebral implant to a first vertebra, the second bone fixation hole configured to receive a second bone fixation element such that the second bone fixation element secures the intervertebral implant to a second vertebra;

a leading surface opposite the trailing surface and spaced from the trailing surface in a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction, wherein the leading surface faces the spacer;

a top surface configured to face the first vertebra when the intervertebral implant is implanted;
