Abstract

Devices and methods to reduce ear wax clogging of acoustic ports, hearing aid systems, and feedback reduction systems are provided. A conformal hearing aid includes a hearing aid body, where the hearing aid body houses a microphone and a receiver, where the microphone is positioned within the hearing aid body to measure acoustic signals from an ambient environment, and where the receiver is positioned within the hearing aid body to emit acoustic signals toward a tympanic membrane of a user; an expandable element, where the expandable element is operatively connected to the hearing aid body, and where the expandable element is configured to encompass a circumferential portion of the hearing aid body when expanded; and an inflation management system, where the inflation management system is configured to expand the expandable element when actuated.

Claims (19)

1. An earphone, comprising:

an ambient sound microphone, wherein the ambient sound microphone measures an acoustic environment on an ambient side of an earphone;

an internal microphone, wherein the internal microphone measures an acoustic environment on an ear canal side of the earphone;

a stent designed to accept a removable eartip;

a channel that passes through the earphone from the ambient side to the ear canal side of the earphone;

a membrane, wherein the membrane obstructs the channel and is attached to a portion of the earphone, wherein the membrane is stressed prior to attachment, wherein the membrane is designed to provide a frequency dependent attenuation profile across the membrane;

a speaker;

a memory; and a

a processor.

2. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane is stressed so that the membrane provides an attenuation of at least 10 dB more at 1000 Hz than when the membrane is unstressed.

3. The earphone according to claim 2 , wherein the membrane is stressed so that the membrane provides a high pass filter above 1000 Hz compared to when the membrane is unstressed.

4. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane is made of at least one of a flexible membrane, rubber-based material, deformable plastic, a low permeability material, Teflon materials, silicone, or an elastomeric materials or a combination thereof.

5. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane thickness is between 0.50 mm to 2.5 mm.

6. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane is stressed so that the membrane provides an attenuation of at least 20 dB more at 1250 Hz than when the membrane is unstressed.

7. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane is stressed so that the membrane provides an attenuation of at least 20 dB more at 300 Hz than when the membrane is unstressed.

8. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the channel is a path through the earphone and not a dedicated tube.

9. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the stent includes an acoustic channel, wherein the acoustic channel is configured to carry acoustical energy from the speaker.

10. The earphone according to claim 1 , wherein the membrane is part of a sleeve.

11. The earphone according to claim 10 , wherein the sleeve is configured to fit over an end of the earphone so that the membrane covers an end of the channel which constitutes the obstruction of the channel.
