Abstract

A client device adaptively streams a 360-degree video. A first segment is displayed based on a first viewing direction at a first time, where the first viewing direction is associated with a first viewport. The client requests a first base buffer segment based on the first viewport. The first base buffer segment has a presentation time after the first segment. At a second time, the viewing direction changes to a second viewing direction associated with a second viewport. The client requests, prior to the presentation time, a first viewport buffer segment based on the second viewport, with the same presentation time. The client device displays a second segment at the presentation time, wherein the second segment is either the first viewport buffer segment or the first base buffer segment. The client provides reports on viewport switching latency and on the most-requested segments.

Claims (32)

1. A method comprising:

rendering a first segment of a viewport-adaptive 360-degree video, the first segment being associated with a first viewport and a first time period, the first segment including all viewports of the video;

retrieving a second segment of the video over a network, the second segment being associated with the first viewport and a second time period subsequent to the first time period, the second segment including all viewports of the video, the retrieving of the second segment being performed before an end of the first time period;

detecting that a viewing direction of the user has changed from a direction associated with the first viewport to a direction associated with a second viewport;

in response to the detected change in the viewing direction, retrieving a third segment of the video over the network, the third segment being associated with the second viewport and the second time period, the third segment including all viewports of the video, the retrieving of the third segment being performed before the end of the first time period; and

rendering the second segment or the third segment during the second time period.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein only one of the second segment and the third segment is rendered during the second time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first time period has a first starting time and first duration, and the second time period has a second starting time and a second duration.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether to render the second segment or the third segment based on a viewing direction of the user at a starting time of the second time period.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising estimating a bandwidth over the network, wherein retrieving the third segment is performed only in response to a determination that the estimated bandwidth is sufficiently large to permit retrieval of the third segment before a starting time of the second time period.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second segments are stored in a base buffer, and wherein the third segment is retrieved only in response to a determination that the base buffer is not predicted to underflow.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third segment is stored in a viewport buffer.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a quality level for the second segment based at least in part on a level of user head movement, with a higher level quality level being selected for a lower level of head movement;

wherein the second segment is retrieved at the determined quality level.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first and second segments are stored in a base buffer, the third segment is stored in a viewport buffer, and wherein, in response to a determination to render the third segment, the second segment is removed from the base buffer.

10. An apparatus comprising at least one processor configured to perform:

rendering a first segment of a viewport-adaptive 360-degree video, the first segment being associated with a first viewport and a first time period, the first segment including all viewports of the video;

retrieving a second segment of the video over a network, the second segment being associated with the first viewport and a second time period subsequent to the first time period, the second segment including all viewports of the video, the retrieving of the second segment being performed before an end of the first time period;

detecting that a viewing direction of the user has changed from a direction associated with the first viewport to a direction associated with a second viewport;

in response to the detected change in the viewing direction, retrieving a third segment of the video over the network, the third segment being associated with the second viewport and the second time period, the third segment including all viewports of the video, the retrieving of the third segment being performed before the end of the first time period; and

rendering the second segment or the third segment during the second time period.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein only one of the second segment and the third segment is rendered during the second time period.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the first time period has a first starting time and first duration, and the second time period has a second starting time and a second duration.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , further configured to determine whether to render the second segment or the third segment based on a viewing direction of the user at a starting time of the second time period.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , further configured to estimate a bandwidth over the network, wherein retrieving the third segment is performed only in response to a determination that the estimated bandwidth is sufficiently large to permit retrieval of the third segment before a starting time of the second time period.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the first and second segments are stored in a base buffer, and wherein the third segment is retrieved only in response to a determination that the base buffer is not predicted to underflow.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the third segment is stored in a viewport buffer.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 , further configured to perform:

determining a quality level for the second segment based at least in part on a level of user head movement, with a higher level quality level being selected for a lower level of head movement;

wherein the second segment is retrieved at the determined quality level.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the first and second segments are stored in a base buffer, the third segment is stored in a viewport buffer, and wherein, in response to a determination to render the third segment, the second segment is removed from the base buffer.
