Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatuses for irrigating a tissue site are described. The system can include a tissue interface and a sealing member configured to be placed over the tissue site to form a sealed space, and a negative-pressure source fluidly coupled to the sealed space. The system includes an irrigation valve having a housing, a piston disposed in the housing, a fluid inlet to fluidly couple a fluid inlet chamber to a fluid source, and a fluid outlet to fluidly couple a fluid outlet chamber to the sealed space. A piston passage extends through the piston and fluidly couples the fluid inlet chamber and the fluid outlet chamber, and a biasing member is coupled to the piston to bias the irrigation valve to a closed position. The negative-pressure source is configured to move the piston between the closed position and an open position to draw fluid to the sealed space.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a housing including an inlet and an outlet; and

a plunger disposed in the housing and defining an inlet chamber in fluid communication with the inlet and an outlet chamber in fluid communication with the outlet, the plunger configured to move between a first position, a second position, and a third position, the plunger comprising:

a head,

a rod extending from the head,

a plug attached to the rod opposite the head, the plug defining a first fluid passage configured to fluidly couple the outlet chamber to the outlet in the third position; and

a second fluid passage extending from the head and through the rod, the second fluid passage configured to provide fluid communication between the inlet chamber and the outlet chamber.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second fluid passage is sized to accommodate a flow rate of about 10 cc/minute at a negative pressure of about 75 mm Hg.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second fluid passage has a diameter between about 1 mm to about 2 mm.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein in the third position, the plug is seated in the outlet of the housing.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid passage extends along a portion of an axial length of the plug from an apex of the plug to a base of the plug.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid passage has a diameter between about 0.2 mm and about 0.3 mm.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid passage is sized to accommodate a flow rate of about 0.5 cc/minute at a negative pressure of about 125 mm Hg.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a spring configured to at least partially surround the rod and bias the plunger.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the spring is configured to bias the plunger between the first position, the second position, and the third position.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein a length of the spring is greater in the first position than a length of the spring in the second position and a length of the spring in the third position.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein a length of the spring in the second position is greater than a length of the spring in the third position.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the spring is disposed in the outlet chamber, has a first end proximate to the outlet of the housing, and a second end operatively coupled to the head of the plunger.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the inlet of the housing is configured to be fluidly coupled to a fluid source.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the outlet of the housing is configured to be fluidly coupled to a negative-pressure source.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plug is conical.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an end of the housing adjacent the outlet is conical.
