Abstract

In one embodiment, a system of detecting seat belt operation in a vehicle includes at least one light source configured to emit a predetermined wavelength of light onto structures within the vehicle, wherein at least one of the structures is a passenger seat belt assembly having a pattern that reflects the predetermined wavelength at a preferred luminance. At least one 3-D time of flight camera is positioned in the vehicle to receive reflected light from the structures in the vehicle and provide images of the structures that distinguish the preferred luminance of the pattern from other structures in the vehicle. A computer processor connected to computer memory and the camera includes computer readable instructions causing the processor to reconstruct 3-D information in regard to respective images of the structures and calculate a depth measurement of the distance of the reflective pattern on the passenger seat belt assembly from the camera.

Claims (26)

1. A system of detecting at least one seat belt position in a vehicle, the system comprising:

at least one light source configured to emit a predetermined wavelength of light onto structures within the vehicle, wherein at least one of the structures comprises a dynamic component of a passenger seat belt assembly, is movable within the vehicle, and has a first pattern that reflects the predetermined wavelength, and wherein at least another one of the structures comprises a fixed component that is stationary within the vehicle and has a second pattern that reflects the predetermined wavelength;

at least one camera positioned in the vehicle to receive reflected light from the structures in the vehicle and provide images of the structures that distinguish the first and second patterns from each other; and

a computer processor connected to computer memory and the camera, wherein the computer memory comprises computer readable instructions causing the processor to plot the images in a coordinate system, wherein the computer readable instructions further causing the processor to use the coordinate system to track occupant motion.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computer readable instructions further cause the processor to track an occupant physiological process using data derived from the tracked occupant motion.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is breathing.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is respiration rate.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is heart rate.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is mouth opening and closing.

7. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is blinking.

8. The system of claim 2 , wherein the occupant physiological process is a speech pattern.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pattern and the second pattern are the same pattern.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pattern and the second pattern are different patterns.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dynamic component comprises a seat belt shoulder strap, wherein presence in the images of the first pattern indicates the seat belt shoulder strap relative to the occupant within the vehicle is properly positioned.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein absence in the images of the first pattern indicates the seat belt shoulder strap relative to the occupant within the vehicle is improperly positioned.

13. The system of claim 2 , wherein the computer readable instructions further cause the processor to issue an alert or warning based on the occupant physiological process.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein tracking occupant motion comprises comparing at least two images and tracking movement of the first pattern in the at least two images.

15. A method of detecting at least one seat belt position in a vehicle, the method comprising the steps of:

providing at least one light source configured to emit a predetermined wavelength of light onto structures within the vehicle, wherein at least one of the structures comprises a dynamic component of a passenger seat belt assembly, is movable within the vehicle, and has a first pattern that reflects the predetermined wavelength, and wherein at least another one of the structures comprises a fixed component that is stationary within the vehicle and has a second pattern that reflects the predetermined wavelength;

providing at least one camera positioned in the vehicle to receive reflected light from the structures in the vehicle and provide images of the structures that distinguish the first and second patterns from each other; and

providing a computer processor connected to computer memory and the camera, wherein the computer memory comprises computer readable instructions causing the processor to plot the images in a coordinate system, wherein the computer readable instructions further causing the processor to use the coordinate system to track occupant motion.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the dynamic component comprises a seat belt shoulder strap, wherein presence in the images of the first pattern indicates the seat belt shoulder strap relative to the occupant within the vehicle is properly positioned.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein absence in the images of the first pattern indicates the seat belt shoulder strap relative to the occupant within the vehicle is improperly positioned.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the computer readable instructions further cause the processor to track an occupant physiological process using data derived from the tracked occupant motion.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the computer readable instructions further cause the processor to issue an alert or warning based on the occupant physiological process.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein tracking occupant motion comprises comparing at least two images and tracking movement of the first pattern in the at least two images.
