Abstract

A method and system for identifying an unwanted caller using a call answering system. The method comprises receiving, by a call records server, information about callers from a plurality of telephony devices and one or more phone number data sources, classifying, by the call records server, one or more of the callers as either wanted or unwanted callers based on the received information, and storing, by the call records server, the received information and the classification of the one or more of the callers into a directory. The method further comprises identifying, by a call answering server, that a call from a given caller from a phone number to a receiving telephony device is from an unwanted caller by searching the directory, and handling, by the call answering server, the call from the given caller according to one or more preferences of the user, the one or more preferences including rejecting the call from the receiving telephony device, playing a recorded message, and disposing of the call.

Claims (36)

1. A method performed by a call answering system for identifying an unwanted caller, the method comprising:

collecting data about callers from a plurality of telephony devices and one or more phone number data sources, the collected data including contact and address book information that are stored on the plurality of telephony devices and call detail records from the one or more phone number data sources;

storing the collected data into a directory, wherein the directory has been enhanced by edits provided from one or more users of the plurality of telephony devices;

determining a likelihood of an incoming call to a phone device being from an unwanted caller based on the collected data;

handling the incoming call based on the determined likelihood exceeding a threshold value set as likely to be that of an unwanted caller, wherein the incoming call is handled according to one or more preferences of a user of the phone device; and

storing the determined likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller into the directory.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller based on one or more quantitative rules.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller based on whether a number of calls placed by a given caller over a period of time exceeds a threshold value.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller based on a comparison of voicemail data for voicemails left by a given caller across the plurality of telephony devices and a classification of the given caller as an unwanted caller when the voicemail data compared across the telephony devices matches.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller based on whether a phone number associated with the incoming call belongs to a real area code or a real subset of the area code.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a score value computed as a result of the one or more quantitative rules.

The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller comprises determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller such that the likelihood is represented by a binary flag indicating whether the likelihood exceeds the threshold value.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein handling the incoming call according to one or more preferences of the user of the phone device comprises handling the incoming call by rejecting the incoming call, playing a recorded message, or disposing of the incoming call.

The method of claim 1 , wherein storing the collected data into the directory comprises storing the collected data into a directory, wherein the directory has been enhanced by one or more of editing of caller identification information, editing images related to callers, and editing classification of callers as wanted or unwanted callers.

10. A system for identifying an unwanted caller, the system comprising:

a call answering server comprising a processor and a memory having executable instructions stored thereon that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

collect data about callers from a plurality of telephony devices and one or more phone number data sources, the collected data including contact and address book information that are stored on the plurality of telephony devices and call detail records from the one or more phone number data sources;

store the collected data into a directory, wherein the directory has been enhanced by edits provided from one or more users of the plurality of telephony devices;

determine a likelihood of an incoming call to a phone device being from an unwanted caller based on the collected data;

handle the incoming call based on the determined likelihood exceeding a threshold value set as likely to be that of an unwanted caller, wherein the incoming call is handled according to one or more preferences of a user of the phone device; and

store the determined likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller into the directory.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller is determined based on one or more quantitative rules and represented by a score value.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller is based on whether a number of calls placed by a given caller over a period of time exceeds a threshold value.

The system of claim 11 , wherein the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller is based on comparing voicemail data for voicemails left by a given caller across the plurality of telephony devices and classifying the given caller as an unwanted caller when the voicemail data compared across the telephony devices matches.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller is based on whether a phone number associated with the incoming call belongs to a real area code or a real subset of the area code.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller is represented by a binary flag indicating whether the likelihood exceeds the threshold value.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more preferences of the user of the phone device comprise one or more of rejecting the incoming call, playing a recorded message, and disposing of the incoming call.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the directory has been enhanced by one or more of editing of caller identification information, editing images related to callers, and editing classification of callers as wanted or unwanted callers.

18. Non-transitory computer-readable media comprising program code that when executed by a programmable processor causes execution of a method for identifying an unwanted caller, the computer-readable media comprising:

computer program code for collecting data about callers from a plurality of telephony devices and one or more phone number data sources, the collected data including contact and address book information that are stored on the plurality of telephony devices and call detail records from the one or more phone number data sources;

computer program code for storing the collected data into a directory, wherein the directory has been enhanced by edits provided from one or more users of the plurality of telephony devices;

computer program code for determining a likelihood of an incoming call to a phone device being from an unwanted caller based on the collected data;

computer program code for handling the incoming call based on the determined likelihood exceeding a threshold value set as likely to be that of an unwanted caller, wherein the incoming call is handled according to one or more preferences of a user of the phone device; and

computer program code for storing the determined likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller into the directory.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 18 , further comprising computer program code for determining a likelihood of an incoming call being from an unwanted caller based on one or more quantitative rules, wherein the likelihood is represented by a score value.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 18 , further comprising computer program code for indicating the likelihood of the incoming call being from an unwanted caller by a binary flag.
