Abstract

A method and apparatus for secure transfer and playback of multimedia content enables the secure transfer of multimedia content from a digital video recorder (DVR) to a personal computer (PC) and further to a handheld device. A DVR determines which devices on a Local Area Network (LAN) are authorized to share and/or retrieve content from the DVR. The DVR receives a connection request from a PC on the LAN, authorizes the connection request and establishes a secure connection between the DVR and the PC. Once the secure connection is established, the DVR receives a request for multimedia content from the PC, prepares the multimedia content for transfer and transfers the multimedia content to the PC.

Claims (17)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting by processing circuitry, via a data network, to a remote device a listing of media content available at a first device, the first device being distinct from the remote device;

receiving, via the data network, from the remote device a selection of a media content item from the listing of the media content available at the first device; and

in response to the receiving of the selection of the media content item, transmitting, to a second device distinct from the first device and from the remote device, an instruction to request, from the first device, a transfer to the second device of the media content item.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device is digital recorder configured to download the selection of the media content from a server, and the second device is a computing device communicating via a local network with the first device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the transmitting to and the receiving from the remote device is via the internet.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of the media content is not stored at the first device when the instruction is transmitted to the second device to request the transfer from the first device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transcoding by the first device the media content into a format suitable for playback at the second device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, prior to the transmitting to the remote device the listing of the media content available at the first device, that the listing of the media content is available for consumption at the second device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the determining that the listing of the media content is available for consumption at the second device comprises determining that the second device transmits key data corresponding to the key data of the first device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting the selection of the media content to a third device.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving from the remote device a request for the listing of the media content available at the first device.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is comprised in the first device.
