Abstract

A mobile device is coupled to a computer system configured to access media content sources and play media content items provided thereby on a media device. The mobile device receives a first control specification that includes a plurality of first information items each associated with one of the media content sources and a first action definition. The first information items are concurrently displayed on a remote control user interface of the mobile device. In accordance with a selection of one of the first information items corresponding to a first content source, the mobile device transmits a command of a first action definition corresponding to the selected first information item to the computer system, and receives a second control specification that includes a plurality of second information items. Each second information item is associated with a respective content item provided by the first content source and a second action definition.

Claims (41)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

at a computer system that is coupled to a media device and facilitates the media device to output media content provided by a plurality of media content sources:

executing an application that accesses the plurality of media content sources and outputs media content provided thereby, wherein the application operates interactively with a remote control application;

transmitting, to a client device that is executing the remote control application, an information item corresponding to a media content item that is provided by a media content source of the plurality of media content sources, the information item selected for presentation on the client device being in a format that is based on a type of the media content that the information item represents and that is being browsed at the client device; and

in response to receiving a selection of the information item, executing a command in relation to the media content item corresponding to the media content source.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the media content item includes an audio track and wherein the plurality of media content sources includes an Internet-based audio channel with which the audio track is associated.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

incorporating the information item and the command in an HTML file; and

transmitting the command associated with the information item to the client device.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the selection, receiving the command from the client device to perform a specified action with respect to the media content item corresponding to the information item.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein executing the command further comprises controlling the media device to play the media content item in response to the selection.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving display rules, wherein the display rules provide instructions for displaying the information item in a user interface of the client device; and

displaying the information item in the user interface of the client device according to the display rules.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the media device is a speaker device.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein executing the command includes altering playback of an audio track on the media device.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the information item includes information describing the media content item, and the information describing the media content item further comprises at least one of a title of the media content item and an image associated with the media content item.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the information item further includes information describing an Internet-based audio channel with which an audio track is associated.

11. A computer system, coupled to a media device and facilitates the media device to output media content provided by a plurality of media content sources, comprising:

a hardware processor that:

executes an application that accesses the plurality of media content sources and outputs media content provided thereby, wherein the application operates interactively with a remote control application;

transmits, to a client device that is executing the remote control application, an information item corresponding to a media content item that is provided by a media content source of the plurality of media content sources, the information item selected for presentation on the client device being in a format that is based on a type of the media content that the information item represents and that is being browsed at the client device; and

in response to receiving a selection of the information item, executes a command in relation to the media content item corresponding to the media content source.

12. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the media content item includes an audio track and wherein the plurality of media content sources includes an Internet-based audio channel with which the audio track is associated.

13. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the hardware processor further:

incorporates the information item and the command in an HTML file; and

transmits the command associated with the information item to the client device.

14. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the hardware processor further receives the command from the client device to perform a specified action with respect to the media content item corresponding to the information item in response to the selection.

15. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein executing the command further comprises controlling the media device to play the media content item in response to the selection.

16. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the hardware processor further:

retrieves display rules, wherein the display rules provide instructions for displaying the information item in a user interface of the client device; and

displays the information item in the user interface of the client device according to the display rules.

17. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the media device is a speaker device.

18. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein executing the command includes altering playback of an audio track on the media device.

19. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the information item includes information describing the media content item, and the information describing the media content item further comprises at least one of a title of the media content item and an image associated with the media content item.

20. The computer system of claim 19 , wherein the information item further includes information describing an Internet-based audio channel with which an audio track is associated.

21. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor of a computer system to perform operations for:

at a computer system that is coupled to a media device and facilitates the media device to output media content provided by a plurality of media content sources:

executing an application that accesses the plurality of media content sources and outputs media content provided thereby, wherein the application operates interactively with a remote control application;

transmitting, to a client device that is executing the remote control application, an information item corresponding to a media content item that is provided by a media content source of the plurality of media content sources, the information item selected for presentation on the client device being in a format that is based on a type of the media content that the information item represents and that is being browsed at the client device; and

in response to receiving a selection of the information item, executing a command in relation to the media content item corresponding to the media content source.
