Abstract

In an embodiment, an apparatus includes an integrated circuit (IC) chip configured to receive a timing signal and a first reference clock signal and generate a first reference time signal based on the timing signal and the first reference clock signal. The IC chip is configured to generate a second reference time signal based on the first reference time signal and a second reference clock signal, different from the first reference clock signal The second reference time signal specifies a count of a number of cycles of the second reference clock signal starting from a particular cycle of the second reference clock signal. The IC chip is configured to synchronize one or more actions performed by the IC chip based on one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first reference clock generator configured to receive a timing signal and a first reference clock signal and generate a first reference time signal based on the timing signal and the first reference clock signal;

a second reference clock generator configured to generate a second reference time signal based on the first reference time signal and a second reference clock signal, different from the first reference clock signal, wherein the second reference time signal specifies a count of a number of cycles of the second reference clock signal starting from a particular cycle of the second reference clock signal; and

one or more components configured to synchronize one or more actions performed by the one or more components based on one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an IC chip configured to receive the timing signal from the first reference clock generator and the first reference clock signal, wherein:

the IC chip is configured to generate a third reference time signal based on the timing signal and the first reference clock signal;

each of the first reference time signal and the third reference time signal is associated with a count of a number of cycles of the first reference clock signal starting from a same particular cycle of the first reference clock signal; and

the first reference time signal and the third reference time signal specify a same count value.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a reference clock source electrically coupled with each of the first reference clock generator and the IC chip wherein the reference clock source is configured to generate and provide the first reference clock signal to each of the first reference clock generator and the IC chip.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the particular cycle of the first reference clock signal is defined by the timing signal.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first reference clock generator comprises a first electrical component and the IC chip comprises a second electrical component, wherein actuation or performance of an operation of the first electrical component and the second electrical component occur in synchronicity based on one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal.

6. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the timing signal is received at the first reference clock generator and the IC chip within a same cycle of the first reference clock signal.

7. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein an additional IC chip comprises the first reference clock generator and the IC chip are identical to each other.

8. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein an additional IC chip comprises the first reference clock generator and the IC chip are different from each other.

9. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein an additional IC chip comprises the first reference clock generator and wherein each of the IC chip and the additional IC chip comprises a digital beamformer (DBF) chip associated with a phased array antenna.

10. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein a time synchronization of one or more operations in the one or more components and one or more operations in the IC chip is performed with a higher accuracy based on use of one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal than with use of the first reference clock signal.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second reference clock generator is configured to generate the second reference time signal triggered by a particular cycle of the first reference time signal.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a count resolution associated with the second reference time signal is higher than a count resolution associated with the first reference time signal.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second reference clock signal comprises an output of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) phase lock loop (PLL).

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second reference clock signal has a frequency that is N times a frequency of the first reference clock signal.

15. A method of synchronizing one or more actions comprising:

receiving a timing signal and a first reference clock signal;

generating a first reference time signal based on the timing signal and the first reference clock signal;

generating a second reference time signal based on the first reference time signal and a second reference clock signal, different from the first reference clock signal, wherein the second reference time signal specifies a count of a number of cycles of the second reference clock signal starting from a particular cycle of the second reference clock signal; and

synchronizing one or more actions performed by one or more components based on one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein generating the second reference time signal is triggered by a particular cycle of the first reference time signal.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein a count resolution associated with the second reference time signal is higher than a count resolution associated with the first reference time signal.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the second reference clock signal comprises an output of a DAC PLL.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the second reference clock signal has a frequency that is N times a frequency of the first reference clock signal.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein an IC chip comprises a first electrical component and an additional IC chip comprises a second electrical component, wherein actuation or performance of an operation of the first electrical component and the second electrical component occur in synchronicity based on one or more of the first reference time signal or the second reference time signal.
