Abstract

Systems and methods are described for displaying a guide for media content available on a user device. An illustrative method includes retrieving media content guide data for a plurality of channels, identifying a first media content item that is not available for retrieval from a content source, in response to identifying the first media content item, identifying a second media content item that is related to the first media content item and is available for retrieval from the content source, retrieving, from the content source, the second media content item, and generating for display a media content guide interface for the plurality of channels, wherein an identifier of the second media content item is displayed in a timeslot for the first media content item.

Claims (57)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request for a first media item;

determining that the first media item is available for online viewing on a device and unavailable for offline viewing on the device;

identifying a plurality of media items that are available for offline retrieval on the device;

identifying a second media item of the plurality of media items that is related to the first media item;

selecting the second media item for offline viewing; and

presenting a user interface that includes media items that are available for offline viewing and excludes media items that are unavailable for offline viewing wherein the second media item is generated for display on the device instead of generating the first media item for display.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the presenting the user interface comprises displaying an identifier for the second media item in a timeslot of the first media item within a personalized guide.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the presenting the user interface comprises displaying both an identifier for the first media item and the identifier for the second media item in a timeslot of the first media item within a personalized guide.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

generating for display an indication that the second media item is provided in place of the first media item.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the second media item of the plurality of media items that is related to the first media item comprises determining that the second media item has one or more of the same genre, plot, director, starring cast member and is from the same series of media items as the first media item.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

retrieving, from user data, a media content preference of a user;

wherein selecting the second media item is based on the media content preference.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the first media item is part of a series of media items; and

querying a database of media items for the series of media items.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

identifying a third media item and a fourth media item in the series of media items;

determining, by using 0-1 knapsack algorithm, that the third media item has a higher relevance score than the fourth media item, wherein the third media item is an immediately preceding or subsequent installment in the series of media items to the first media item, than the fourth media item;

presenting a user interface element to generate for display the third media item on the device; and

presenting a user interface element to generate for display the fourth media item subsequent to generating for display the third media item on the device.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating for display a media content guide interface that includes identifiers for the media items that are available for offline viewing and excludes identifiers for the media items that are unavailable for offline viewing on the device while the device is not communicatively coupled to a content source.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving media guide data for a plurality of channels, wherein the media guide data indicates, for each of the plurality of channels, media items that will be distributed by each respective channel during a plurality of timeslots;

wherein the first media item has a respective timeslot of the plurality of timeslots.

11. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a request for a first media item;

determine that the first media item is available for online viewing on a device and unavailable for offline viewing on the device;

identify a plurality of media items that are available for offline retrieval on the device;

identify a second media item of the plurality of media items that is related to the first media item;

select the second media item for offline viewing; and

present a user interface that includes media items that are available for offline viewing and excludes media items that are unavailable for offline viewing wherein the second media item is generated for display on the device instead of generating the first media item for display.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry, when presenting the user interface, is further configured to display an identifier for the second media item in a timeslot of the first media item within a personalized guide.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry, when presenting the user interface, is further configured to display both an identifier for the first media item and the identifier for the second media item in a timeslot of the first media item within a personalized guide.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display an indication that the second media item is provided in place of the first media item.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry, when identifying the second media item of the plurality of media items that is related to the first media item, is further configured to determine that the second media item has one or more of the same genre, plot, director, starring cast member and is from the same series of media items as the first media item.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve, from user data, a media content preference of a user;

wherein selecting the second media item is based on the media content preference.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the first media item is part of a series of media items; and

query a database of media items for the series of media items.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

identify a third media item and a fourth media item in the series of media items;

determine, by using 0-1 knapsack algorithm, that the third media item has a higher relevance score than the fourth media item, wherein the third media item is an immediately preceding or subsequent installment in the series of media items to the first media item, than the fourth media item;

present a user interface element to generate for display the third media item on the device; and

present a user interface element to generate for display the fourth media item subsequent to generating for display the third media item on the device.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display a media content guide interface that includes identifiers for the media items that are available for offline viewing and excludes identifiers for the media items that are unavailable for offline viewing on the device while the device is not communicatively coupled to a content source.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve media guide data for a plurality of channels, wherein the media guide data indicates, for each of the plurality of channels, media items that will be distributed by each respective channel during a plurality of timeslots;

wherein the first media item has a respective timeslot of the plurality of timeslots.
