Abstract

A base station transmits a radio resource control (RRC) message indicating that a wireless device starts a time alignment timer of a timing advance group (TAG) in response to the RRC message. The base station starts the time alignment timer of the TAG before transmitting an initial medium access control (MAC) timing advance command (TAC) for the TAG and after transmitting the RRC message.

Claims (29)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting, by a base station, a radio resource control (RRC) message indicating that a wireless device starts a time alignment timer of a timing advance group (TAG) in response to the RRC message; and

starting the time alignment timer of the TAG before transmitting an initial medium access control (MAC) timing advance command (TAC) for the TAG and after transmitting the RRC message.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the starting the time alignment timer is before initiating a random access process for the TAG.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving uplink data signals via a cell of the TAG before:

receiving the initial MAC TAC; and

performing an initial random access process for the TAG.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the uplink data signals are transmitted based on a stored timing advance value.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the initial MAC TAC comprising a timing advance value after receiving uplink data from the wireless device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RRC message comprises a time alignment timer information element (IE) indicating a value of the time alignment timer of the TAG.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein uplink transmission timing of one or more cells in the TAG is based on a timing of a reference cell in the TAG.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RRC message indicates a timing advance of zero for transmission of uplink data by the wireless device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the TAG comprises one or more cells.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting an activation command activating a cell of the TAG.

11. A method comprising:

transmitting, by a base station, a radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message that triggers a wireless device to start a time alignment timer of a timing advance group; and

starting the time alignment timer of the timing advance group, before initiating a random access process for the timing advance group, in response to the RRC reconfiguration message.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the RRC reconfiguration message indicates configuration of the timing advance group; and

the starting the time alignment timer is performed when the timing advance group is configured.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving an RRC reconfiguration complete message confirming that the RRC reconfiguration message is received by the wireless device.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving uplink data signals via a cell of the timing advance group:

before receiving an initial medium access control (MAC) timing advance command (TAC); and

before performing an initial random access process for the timing advance group.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the uplink data signals are transmitted based on a stored timing advance value.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising transmitting the initial MAC TAC comprising a timing advance value after receiving uplink data from the wireless device.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the RRC reconfiguration message comprises a time alignment timer information element (IE) indicating a value of the time alignment timer of the timing advance group.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein uplink transmission timing of one or more cells in the timing advance group is based on a timing of a reference cell in the timing advance group.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the RRC reconfiguration message indicates a timing advance of zero for transmission of uplink data by the wireless device.
