Abstract

A battery pack includes a housing and a plurality of cell module assemblies arranged within the housing. Each of the cell module assemblies includes a positive collector plate, a negative collector plate, and a plurality of battery cells. Each of the plurality of battery cells includes a positive terminal connected to the positive collector plate and a negative terminal connected to the negative collector plate. A number of the plurality of the cell module assemblies within the housing defines a capacity of the battery pack.

Claims (55)

1 . A battery pack comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of cell module assemblies arranged within the housing and including a plurality of battery cells, each having a positive terminal and a negative terminal;

an upper cell holder plate receiving, on an inner side, a positive end of each of the plurality of battery cells that covers all of the plurality of cell module assemblies;

a lower cell holder plate receiving, on an inner side, a negative end of each of the plurality of battery cells that covers all of the plurality of cell module assemblies;

a positive collector plate received within and extending over an outer side of the upper cell holder plate; and

a negative collector plate received within and extending over an outer side of the lower cell holder plate;

wherein a number of the plurality of cell module assemblies within the housing defines a capacity of the battery pack.

2 . The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of cell module assemblies includes a unique identifier.

3 . The battery pack of claim 2 , wherein the unique identifier is in the form of a barcode or serial number.

4 . The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of cell module assemblies includes a first cell module assembly having a first plurality of battery cells and a second cell module assembly having a second plurality of battery cells.

5 . The battery pack of claim 4 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are arranged in parallel and the second plurality of battery cells are arranged in parallel.

6 . The battery pack of claim 4 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are arranged in parallel and the second plurality of battery cells includes at least two battery cells in series.

7 . The battery pack of claim 4 , wherein both the first plurality of battery cells and the second plurality of battery cells include at least two battery cells in series.

8 . The battery pack of claim 4 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells includes a first number of battery cells and the second plurality of battery cells includes a second number of battery cells, wherein the first number of battery cells is equal to the second number of battery cells.

9 . The battery pack of claim 4 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells includes a first number of battery cells and the second plurality of battery cells includes a second number of battery cells, wherein the first number of battery cells is different that the second number of battery cells.

10 . The battery pack of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to determine a useful life measurement for each of the plurality of cell module assemblies, and compare the useful life measurements to a first end of life threshold.

11 . A method of manufacturing a battery pack, the method comprising:

determining a number of cell module assemblies required to meet a battery pack capacity;

installing the number of cell module assemblies within a housing, wherein each of the number of cell module assemblies includes:

a plurality of battery cells, each having a positive terminal and a negative terminal;

installing an upper cell holder plate on a positive end of each of the plurality of battery cells to cover all of the number of cell module assemblies;

installing a lower cell holder plate receiving a negative end of each of the plurality of battery cells to cover all of the number of cell module assemblies;

installing a positive collector plate on an outer surface of the upper cell holder plate; and

installing a negative collector plate on an outer surface of the lower cell holder plate.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

monitoring a useful life measurement for each of the number of cell module assemblies; and

comparing the useful life measurements to a first end of life threshold.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

providing an indication when the useful life measurements indicate that one of the number of cell module assemblies is greater than or equal to the first end of life threshold.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

removing the one of the number of cell module assemblies from the housing.

15 . A method of manufacturing a battery pack assembly, the method comprising:

assembling a first battery pack by:

arranging a first plurality of cell module assemblies within a first housing, wherein the first plurality of cell module assemblies includes a first number of cell module assemblies, and wherein each of the first plurality of cell module assemblies is formed by:

connecting a first positive terminal on each of a first plurality of battery cells to a first positive collector plate; and

connecting a first negative terminal on each of the first plurality of battery cells to a first negative collector plate; and

assembling a second battery pack by:

arranging a second plurality of cell module assemblies within a second housing, wherein the second plurality of cell module assemblies includes a second number of cell module assemblies, and wherein each of the second plurality of cell module assemblies is formed by:

connecting a second positive terminal on each of a second plurality of battery cells to a second positive collector plate; and

connecting a second negative terminal on each of the second plurality of battery cells to a second negative collector plate, and

wherein the first number of cell module assemblies is different than the second number of cell module assemblies.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

prior to arranging the first plurality of cell module assemblies within the first housing, determining the first number of cell module assemblies required to meet a first battery pack capacity; and

prior to arranging the second plurality of cell module assemblies within the second housing, determining the second number of cell module assemblies required to meet a second battery pack capacity.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the first battery pack capacity is different than the second battery pack capacity.

18 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

connecting each of the first plurality of battery cells in parallel; and

connecting each of the second plurality of battery cells in parallel.

19 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

connecting at least two of the first plurality of battery cells in series; and

connecting at least two of the second plurality of battery cells in series.

20 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

connecting at least two of the first plurality of battery cells in series; and

connecting each of the second plurality of battery cells in parallel.
