Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described for use with a digital microscope unit that includes a digital microscope. A biological cell sample that is disposed within a sample carrier is received into the digital microscope unit. It is determined that there is a variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope due to curvature in the sample carrier and/or due to tolerance in setup of the microscope. In response to determining that there is the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope, the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope is accounted for. Other applications are also described.

Claims (27)

1. A method for use with a digital microscope unit that includes a digital microscope, comprising:

receiving a biological cell sample that is disposed within a sample carrier, into the digital microscope unit;

determining that there is a variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope due to curvature in the sample carrier and/or due to tolerance in setup of the microscope, by determining a focus configuration at which the microscope should image the biological cell sample, by using variations in intensity-related data between images acquired at a plurality of different focus configurations and deriving information relating to the focus configuration at which the microscope should image the biological cell sample based on the variations in intensity-related data between images acquired at a plurality of different focus configurations;

capturing at least one image of the biological cell sample disposed within the sample carrier;

determining a characteristic of the biological cell sample by analyzing the at least one captured image,

the analyzing of the at least one captured image comprising, in response to determining that there is the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope, accounting for the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope, by using the calculated data that are indicative of focus variation as an input for calculating focus confidence scores indicative of levels of confidence in focus configurations calculated for respective focus analysis regions.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the biological cell sample includes a blood sample, and wherein determining a characteristic of the biological cell sample comprises determining a characteristic of the blood sample.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein determining a characteristic of the blood sample comprises detecting a presence of a pathogen suspected to be included in the blood sample.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein determining a characteristic of the blood sample comprises performing a blood count on the blood sample.

5. The method according to claim 1 , the method further comprising identifying an entity within the sample by analyzing the at least one captured image, wherein identifying the entity comprises:

identifying a candidate of the entity within the sample that is associated with a focus confidence score that is lower than a threshold; and

in response thereto, acquiring one or more images of the candidate using different imaging parameters to those previously used to image the candidate.

6. Apparatus for use with a biological cell sample that is disposed within a sample carrier, the apparatus comprising:

a microscopy unit, comprising:

a digital microscope;

a surface configured to receiving the biological cell sample that is disposed within the sample carrier; and

a computer processor configured:

to determine that there is a variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope due to curvature in the sample carrier and/or due to tolerance in setup of the microscope;

to determine a focus configuration at which the microscope should image the biological cell sample, by using variations in intensity-related data between images acquired at a plurality of different focus configurations and deriving information relating to the focus configuration at which the microscope should image the biological cell sample based on the variations in intensity-related data between images acquired at a plurality of different focus configurations;

to capture at least one image of the biological cell sample that is disposed within the sample carrier;

to determine a characteristic of the biological sample by analyzing the at least one captured image, the analyzing of the at least one captured image comprising, in response to determining that there is the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope, accounting for the variation in the focal depth of the biological sample with respect to the microscope, by using the calculated data that are indicative of focus variation as an input for calculating focus confidence scores indicative of levels of confidence in focus configurations calculated for respective focus analysis regions.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the biological cell sample includes a blood sample, and the computer processor is configured to determine a characteristic of the blood sample.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the computer processor is configured to detect a presence of a pathogen suspected to be included in the blood sample.

9. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the computer processor is configured to perform a blood count on the blood sample.

10. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the computer processor is further configured to identify an entity within the sample by analyzing the at least one captured image, by:

identifying a candidate of the entity within the sample that is associated with a focus confidence score that is lower than a threshold; and

in response thereto, acquiring one or more images of the candidate using different imaging parameters to those previously used to image the candidate.
