Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed herein for encouraging particular behavior while occupying vehicles. For example, by granting and restricting access to media and other user comfort devices based on whether or not a user is conforming to a predetermined rule set, the media guidance application may encourage a user to adhere to the rule set.

Claims (52)

1. A method for encouraging behavior while occupying a vehicle, the method comprising:

determining, using control circuitry, a goal of a current trip in which a user is engaged;

associating the current trip with a first set of rules, from a plurality of sets of rules, that are associated with the goal;

determining, using the control circuitry, an electronic device setting, for an electronic device used for consuming media, that is associated with adherence to the first set of rules;

monitoring, using the control circuitry, the user's operation of the vehicle while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to the user's use of the electronic device by video recording the user and analyzing objects in frames from the recorded video to determine whether the user operation of the vehicle adheres to the first set of rules; and

enabling the electronic device setting, for the electronic device used for consuming media, in response to determining that the user operation of the vehicle adheres to the first set of rules.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, using control circuitry, that the goal of the current trip in which the user is engaged relates to a second goal that is distinct from the goal; and

in response to the determining that the current trip relates to the second goal that is distinct from the goal:

associating the current trip with a second set of rules, from the plurality of sets of rules, that are associated with the second goal;

determining, using control circuitry, a media option that is associated with adherence to the second set of rules;

monitoring, using the control circuitry, the user's behavior while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to use of their electronic device to determine whether the user behavior adheres to the second set of rules; and

enabling the media option in response to determining that the user behavior adheres to the second set of rules.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the second goal is unrelated to the user's employment.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, applying a different set of rules to the current trip based on different goals of the current trip, wherein each goal of the current trip is associated with a different set of rules.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a travel itinerary of the current trip.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a destination of the current trip.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the destination is related to the user's employment.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a length of time associated with the current trip.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

based on the monitoring the user's behavior while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to use of their electronic device, determining that the user behavior violates the first set of rules; and

in response to the determination that the user behavior violates the first set of rules, disabling the media option that was previously enabled.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining that the user is attempting to access the media option while the media option is disabled; and

in response to determining that the user is attempting to access the media option while the media option is disabled, transmitting an alert to a remote user device, wherein the alert provides information related to the attempted access.

11. A system for encouraging behavior while occupying a vehicle, the system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

determine a goal of a current trip in which a user is engaged;

associate the current trip with a first set of rules, from a plurality of sets of rules, that are associated with the goal;

determine an electronic device setting, for an electronic device used for consuming media, that is associated with adherence to the first set of rules;

monitor the user's operation of the vehicle while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to the user's use of the electronic device by video recording the user;

analyze objects in frames from the recorded video to determine whether the user operation of the vehicle adheres to the first set of rules; and

enable the electronic device setting, for the electronic device used for consuming media, in response to determining that the user operation of the vehicle adheres to the first set of rules.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the goal of the current trip in which the user is engaged relates to a second goal that is distinct from the goal; and

in response to the determining that the current trip relates to the second goal that is distinct from the goal:

associate the current trip with a second set of rules, from the plurality of sets of rules, that are associated with the second goal;

determine a media option that is associated with adherence to the second set of rules;

monitor the user's behavior while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to use of their electronic device to determine whether the user behavior adheres to the second set of rules; and

enable the media option in response to determining that the user behavior adheres to the second set of rules.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the second goal is unrelated to the user's employment.

14. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to apply a different set of rules to the current trip based on different goals of the current trip, wherein each goal of the current trip is associated with a different set of rules.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a travel itinerary of the current trip.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a destination of the current trip.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the destination is related to the user's employment.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining the goal of the current trip in which a user is engaged is based on a length of time associated with the current trip.

19. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

based on the monitoring the user's behavior while the user is occupying the vehicle as it relates to use of their electronic device, determine that the user behavior violates the first set of rules; and

in response to the determination that the user behavior violates the first set of rules, disable the media option that was previously enabled.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the user is attempting to access the media option while the media option is disabled; and

in response to determining that the user is attempting to access the media option while the media option is disabled, transmit an alert to a remote user device, wherein the alert provides information related to the attempted access.
