Abstract

A structured organic film (SOF) is described, including a plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments, and a plurality of linkers. The non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segment can include pentaerythritol, triethylene glycol (TEG), benzyl tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium (BTHEA), or a combination thereof. The structured organic film can include a plurality of capping segments, for example, a plurality of ionic capping segments, such as N-hydroxyethyl-1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium (NEtTMIm), N-hydroxypropyl-1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium (NPTMIm), or a combination thereof. An ion-exchange membrane may include one or more examples of the structured organic film (SOF).

Claims (32)

1 . A structured organic film (SOF), comprising:

a plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments; and

a plurality of linkers, wherein at least one of the plurality of linkers connects at least one of the plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments.

2 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segment comprises a compound which form covalent bonds with other segments of the structured organic film (SOF) during a film formation process.

3 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segment comprises a compound which has less than twenty repeating unit in its chemical structure.

4 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segment is selected from pentaerythritol, triethylene glycol (TEG), benzyl tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium (BTHEA), neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane, xylitol, dipentaerythritol, glycerine, dipropylene glycol, sorbitol, Mannich bases, sucrose, N-ethyl-N-methyl-N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium salt, N-methyl-N,N,N-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium salt, N-ethyl-N,N,N-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium salt, N-butyl-N,N,N-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium salt, and mixtures thereof.

5 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of capping segments.

6 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of capping segments comprises a plurality of ionic capping segments.

7 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of ionic capping segments comprises N-hydroxyethyl-1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium (NEtTMIm), N-hydroxypropyl-1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium (NPTMIm), or a combination thereof.

8 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments comprises an ionic segment.

9 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 8 , wherein the ionic segment comprises benzyl tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium (BTHEA).

10 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the SOF is from about 250 nm to about 500 μm.

11 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein the structured organic film (SOF) has an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of from about 0.25 mEq/g to about 5.00 mEq/g.

12 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 , wherein a content of the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments in the SOF is from about 20 wt % to about 40 wt % based on a total weight of the SOF.

13 . An ion-exchange membrane, comprising the structured organic film (SOF) of claim 1 .

14 . A structured organic film (SOF), comprising:

a plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments;

a plurality of linkers, wherein at least one of the plurality of linkers connects at least one of the plurality of non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segments; and

a plurality of ionic capping segments, wherein at least one of the plurality of ionic capping segments is reacted with at least one of the plurality of segments or at least one of the plurality of linkers.

15 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 14 , wherein the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol is selected from the group consisting of a non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyether polyols and non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyester polyol.

16 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 14 , wherein the non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol segment comprises a compound which has less than twenty repeating unit in its chemical structure.

17 . A structured organic film (SOF), comprising:

a plurality of ionic segments;

a plurality of non-ionic segments; and

a plurality of linkers; and

wherein at least one or more of the plurality of non-ionic segments comprises a non-polymeric, non-fluorinated polyol.

18 . The structured organic film (SOF) of claim 17 wherein the ionic segment comprises benzyl tris(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium (BTHEA).
