Abstract

Methods and systems for transmitting an interruption-free version of a television program for recording on a user equipment device. In one aspect, a system transmits a first stream including a television program to a user equipment device. The system receives an indication that the television program is being recorded on the user equipment device. The system determines whether an interruption is imminent during transmission of the television program. In response to determining that the interruption is imminent, the system generates a second stream including the television program. The second stream does not include the interruption during the transmission of the television program. The system transmits the second stream to the user equipment device along with an instruction to switch recording of the television program from the first stream to the second stream.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, from a user equipment device, a request to store a first program from a first stream, wherein the first stream is subject to interruption of the first program;

initiating, using the user equipment device, a storage of the first program from the first stream;

determining that both (a) the first program from the first stream is being displayed on the user equipment device during transmission of the first program from the first stream, and (b) the first program from the first stream includes the interruption; and

based at least in part on the determining:

creating an alternate digital video stream including the first program, wherein the alternate digital video stream does not include the interruption of the first program;

transmitting the alternate digital video stream and an instruction to switch storing of the first program from the first stream to the alternate digital video stream, wherein the instruction includes a recording channel identifier for the alternate digital video stream; and

storing the alternate digital video stream using cloud-based storage.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interruption comprises at least one of: an emergency alert message or an unscheduled news broadcast.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining that the first program from the first stream includes the interruption further comprises:

retrieving metadata of the first program from the first stream; and

identifying information in the metadata relating to the interruption.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the user equipment device, a request to playback the stored first program.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting, using the user equipment device, the alternate digital video stream on a display of the user equipment device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to the initiating, determining whether the first program is already being stored.

7. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive, from a user equipment device, a request to store a first program from a first stream, wherein the first stream is subject to interruption of the first program;

initiate, using the user equipment device, a storage of the first program from the first stream;

communications circuitry configured to:

determine that both (a) the first program from the first stream is being displayed on the user equipment device during transmission of the first program from the first stream, and (b) the first program from the first stream includes the interruption; and

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

based at least in part on the determining:

create an alternate digital video stream including the first program, wherein the alternate digital video stream does not include the interruption of the first program;

transmit the alternate digital video stream and an instruction to switch storing of the first program from the first stream to the alternate digital video stream, wherein the instruction includes a recording channel identifier for the alternate digital video stream; and

store the alternate digital video stream using cloud-based storage.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the interruption comprises at least one of: an emergency alert message or an unscheduled news broadcast.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the communications circuitry is further configured to determine that the first program from the first stream includes the interruption by:

retrieving metadata of the first program from the first stream; and

identifying information in the metadata relating to the interruption.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive, from the user equipment device, a request to playback the stored first program.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

transmit, using the user equipment device, the alternate digital video stream on a display of the user equipment device.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

prior to the initiating, determine whether the first program is already being stored.
