Abstract

The present technology can move operating system folders into a sync folder of a cross platform content management system, and redirect the operating system to look for the OS folders in the sync folder. The present technology also provides an invariant checker to make sure that another application has not moved the OS folders after they have been placed in the sync folder, and provides solutions when the OS folders are moved out of the sync folder of the content management system. Additionally, when OS folders for multiple client devices are in the sync folder on the content management system, the present technology can provide a mechanism to make the content items in an OS folder on a first client device also sync into an OS folder on second client device.

Claims (52)

1. A method comprising:

moving a first operating system (OS) folder of a first client device into a sync folder of a content-management system;

redirecting an OS of the first client device to look for the first OS folder in the sync folder;

moving a second operating system (OS) folder of a second client device into the sync folder of the content-management system; and

redirecting an OS of the second client device to look for the second OS folder in the sync folder.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

synchronizing a content item in the first OS folder of the first client device with the second OS folder of the second client device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

synchronizing the first OS folder of the first client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system; and

synchronizing the second OS folder of the second client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

maintaining a plurality of content items that are common to both the first client device and the second client device by both the first OS folder of the first client device and the second OS folder of the second client device synchronizing to the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying at least one content item in the sync folder of the content-management system that is not suitable for synchronizing with the OS folder on the first client device; and

excluding the least one content item from a synchronization with the first OS folder of the first client device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one content item originated from the second OS folder of the second client device.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

marking the at least one content item to indicate that the at least one content item has not been synchronized.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first OS folder of the first client device is selected from a group comprising a desktop folder, a documents folder, a downloads folder, a photos folder, and a music folder.

9. A system comprising:

a storage configured to store instructions; and

at least one processor configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

move a first operating system (OS) folder of a first client device into a sync folder of a content-management system;

redirect an OS of the first client device to look for the first OS folders in the sync folder;

move a second operating system (OS) folder of a second client device into the sync folder of the content-management system; and

redirect an OS of the second client device to look for the second OS folders in the sync folder.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

synchronize a content item in the first OS folder of the first client device with the second OS folder of the second client device.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

synchronize the first OS folder of the first client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system; and

synchronize the second OS folder of the second client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

maintain a plurality of content items that are common to both the first client device and the second client device by both the first OS folder of the first client device and the second OS folder of the second client device synchronizing to the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

identify at least one content item in the sync folder of the content-management system that is not suitable for synchronizing with the OS folder on the first client device; and

exclude the least one content item from a synchronization with the first OS folder of the first client device.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one content item originated from the second OS folder of the second client device.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the instructions and cause the at least one processor to:

mark the at least one content item to indicate that the at least one content item has not been synchronized.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first OS folder of the first client device is selected from a group comprising a desktop folder, a documents folder, a downloads folder, a photos folder, and a music folder.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions, the instructions, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to:

move a first operating system (OS) folder of a first client device into a sync folder of a content-management system;

redirect an OS of the first client device to look for the first OS folders in the sync folder;

move a second operating system (OS) folder of a second client device into the sync folder of the content-management system; and

redirect an OS of the second client device to look for the second OS folders in the sync folder.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the computer readable medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to:

synchronize a content item in the first OS folder of the first client device with the second OS folder of the second client device.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the computer readable medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to:

synchronize the first OS folder of the first client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system; and

synchronize the second OS folder of the second client device with the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the computer readable medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to:

maintain a plurality of content items that are common to both the first client device and the second client device by both the first OS folder of the first client device and the second OS folder of the second client device synchronizing to the sync folder OS folder of the content-management system.
