Abstract

An electrode for an energy storage device is disclosed. The electrode includes an active layer. The active layer includes a network of high aspect ratio carbon elements defining void spaces within the network, a plurality of electrode active material particles disposed in the void spaces within the network, wherein the active material particles comprise silicon, and a polymeric additive, the polymeric additive being at least one of a polyolefin, a Poly(acrylic acid), and a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR).

Claims (18)

1 . An energy storage device, comprising:

an electrolyte;

an active layer comprising:

an anode active material that comprises silicon and graphite;

a cathode active layer comprising:

a cathode active material that comprises a blend of LMFP and NCM; where the NCM is present in a larger amount than the LMFP;

where each of the anode active material and the cathode active material comprises a polymeric binder that has less than 900 parts per million of fluorine.

2 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the silicon comprises particles in the form of SiOx, where x is 1 to 4.

3 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the silicon is microsilicon.

4 . The energy storage device of claim 2 , wherein the SiOx is present in amount of greater than 50 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active material.

5 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the SiOx is present in amount of greater than 80 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active material.

6 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein LMFP is present in an amount of less than 50 wt %, based on a total weight of the cathode active material.

7 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the anode active layer comprises the anode active material in an amount of greater than equal to 90 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active layer.

8 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the anode active layer comprises the anode active material in an amount of greater than equal to 95 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active layer.

9 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the cathode active layer comprises the cathode active material in an amount of greater than equal to 90 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active layer.

10 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the cathode active layer comprises the cathode active material in an amount of greater than equal to 95 wt %, based on a total weight of the anode active layer.

11 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the anode active layer further comprises an electrically conducting additive.

12 . The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the cathode active layer further comprises an electrically conducting additive.
