Abstract

A method of localizing a target anatomy involves advancing a ureteroscope to a target calyx of a kidney of a patient through at least a portion of a urinary tract of the patient, determining a positional offset between one or more position sensors associated with the ureteroscope and a target papilla of the kidney that is at least partially exposed within the target calyx, and determining a percutaneous access target based at least in part on one or more of a present position of the one or more position sensors or the positional offset.

Claims (38)

1. A method of localizing a target anatomy, the method comprising:

contacting a distal portion of an endoscope to an anatomical feature within an anatomy;

determining a contact position of the distal portion of the endoscope in contact with the anatomical feature;

determining a position of the anatomical feature based at least in part on the position of the distal portion of the endoscope;

tracking the position of the anatomical feature over a period of time, wherein tracking the position of the anatomical feature includes:

retracting the distal portion of the endoscope away from the contact position; and

responsive to the retracting, determining a positional offset between the distal portion of the endoscope and the anatomical feature, wherein tracking the position of the anatomical feature is based at least in part on the contact position and the positional offset; and generating a real-time target for percutaneous access based on the tracked position.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to the retracting, determining a retracted position of the distal portion of the endoscope, wherein determining the positional offset is based at least in part on electromagnetic sensor data associated with the retracted position.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the positional offset is based at least in part on one or more images captured using a camera of the endoscope responsive to the retracting.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the positional offset indicates a pitch, a yaw, and a roll associated with the distal portion of the endoscope.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the positional offset indicates at least five degrees of freedom associated with the distal portion of the endoscope.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endoscope is a ureteroscope advanced to an anatomical site through a urinary tract of the anatomy.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the anatomical site is a calyx of a kidney within the anatomy, and wherein the anatomical feature is a papilla of the kidney that is at least partially exposed within the calyx.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

advancing a percutaneous access instrument along a path to the anatomical feature based at least in part on the real-time target.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

extracting an object from the anatomical feature through the path.

10. A system comprising:

an endoscope configured to advance to an anatomical site within an anatomy; and

a control system configured to:

contact a distal portion of the endoscope to an anatomical feature within the anatomy;

determine a contact position of the distal portion of the endoscope in contact with the anatomical feature;

determine a position of the anatomical feature based at least in part on the position of the distal portion of the endoscope;

track the position of the anatomical feature over a period of time, wherein tracking the position of the anatomical feature includes:

retracting the distal portion of the endoscope away from the contact position; and

responsive to the retracting, determining a positional offset between the distal portion of the endoscope and the anatomical feature, wherein tracking the position of the anatomical feature is based at least in part on the contact position and the positional offset; and generate a real-time target for percutaneous access based on the tracked position.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

responsive to the retracting, determine a retracted position of the distal portion of the endoscope, wherein determining the positional offset is based at least in part on electromagnetic sensor data associated with the retracted position.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein determining the positional offset is based at least in part on one or more images captured using a camera of the endoscope responsive to the retracting.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the positional offset indicates a pitch, a yaw, and a roll associated with the distal portion of the endoscope.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the positional offset indicates at least five degrees of freedom associated with the distal portion of the endoscope.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the endoscope is a ureteroscope advanced to an anatomical site through a urinary tract of the anatomy.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical site is a calyx of a kidney within the anatomy, and wherein the anatomical feature is a papilla of the kidney that is at least partially exposed within the calyx.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

advance a percutaneous access instrument along a path to the anatomical feature based at least in part on the real-time target.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

extract an object from the anatomical feature through the path.
