Abstract

An anti-cheating method in virtual reality environments includes detecting when a user's eyes are attempting to look outside a virtual reality device during an educational testing activity and activating an external camera of the virtual reality device to record video of the real-world environment of the user to determine whether the user attempted to cheat.

Claims (62)

1. A method for deterring cheating in a virtual reality educational environment comprising:

receiving eye-tracking data from a virtual reality device worn by a user that is engaging in an educational testing activity being displayed in a virtual reality environment;

detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

activating an external camera of the virtual reality device and recording a first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user in response to detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device; and

displaying the first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user to assist determining whether the user attempted to cheat on the educational testing.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting when the eye track-tracking data indicates that the user is looking up, down or to a side of the education testing activity being displayed in the virtual reality environment.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising blurring display of the virtual environment around a periphery of a focused area of the educational testing activity being displayed that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising blurring pixels displayed around an edge of the user's visual field that is outside of the focused area of the educational testing activity being display that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising determining the user is attempting to look at the surrounding real world-environment when a majority of the user's visual field includes blurred pixels.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

11. A system for deterring cheating in a virtual reality educational environment comprising:

a processor in communication with a memory and a virtual reality display device, the memory including instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive eye-tracking data from a virtual reality device worn by a user that is engaging in an educational testing activity being displayed in a virtual reality environment;

detect when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

activate an external camera of the virtual reality device in response to detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device and recording a first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

display the first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user for assisting determination of whether the user attempted to cheat on the educational testing.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory further includes instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

record a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

record a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

display the second video and display the third video for comparison to assist determination of differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the memory further includes instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

blur display of the virtual environment around a periphery of a focused area of the educational testing activity being displayed that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the memory further includes instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

blur pixels displayed around an edge of the user's visual field that is outside of the focused area of the educational testing activity being display that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory further includes instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

blur display of the virtual environment around a periphery of a focused area of the educational testing activity being displayed that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the memory further includes instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

blur pixels displayed around an edge of the user's visual field that is outside of the focused area of the educational testing activity being display that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

17. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor to perform a method for displaying an object to a user in a virtual reality environment, the method comprising:

receiving eye-tracking data from a virtual reality device worn by a user that is engaging in an educational testing activity being displayed in a virtual reality environment;

detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

activating an external camera of the virtual reality device and recording a first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user in response to detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device; and

displaying the first video of the surrounding real-world environment of the user to assist determining whether the user attempted to cheat on the educational testing.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the method further comprises:

recording a second video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment before said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user;

recording a third video of a virtual reality representation of the user engaging in the education testing activity in the virtual environment after said detecting when the eye-tracking data indicates the user is attempting to look outside of the virtual reality device to a surrounding real-world environment of the user; and

displaying the second video and displaying the third video for comparison to determine differences in how the user engaged in the educational testing activity.

19. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the method further comprises:

blurring pixels displayed around an edge of the user's visual field that is outside of an area of the educational testing activity being displayed that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining the user is attempting to look at the surrounding real world-environment when a majority of the user's visual field includes blurred pixels.

21. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the method further comprises:

blurring pixels displayed around an edge of the user's visual field that is outside of an area of the educational testing activity being displayed that is intended for the user to focus their visual field to engage in the testing activity.
