Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for power management in communication devices, particularly based on cable connectivity. A power management component in a system may be configured to manage power use in the system based on measurements associated with a signal path used for communication by the system via a communication port, wherein the managing includes. Managing the power use may include determining, based on the measurements, connectivity related information associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port; applying, based on the connectivity related information, one or more power use reduction measures, wherein the one or more power use reduction measures include transitioning between different power related states; and monitoring one or more conditions to determine when to stop, undo, or reverse at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

Claims (41)

1. A system comprising:

a power management component configured to manage power use in the system based on measurements associated with a signal path used for communication by the system via a communication port, wherein the managing comprises:

determining, based on the measurements, connectivity related information associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port;

applying, based on the connectivity related information, one or more power use reduction measures, wherein the one or more power use reduction measures comprise transitioning between different power related states; and

monitoring one or more conditions to determine when to stop, undo, or reverse at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component comprises:

a sensing component; and

a power control component;

wherein:

the sensing component is configured to alert the power management component regarding at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port; and

the power control component is configured to apply based on the alert, at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, upon application of at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turn off one or more electronic components of the system.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein at least part of the power management component is configured to remain active and to continue to monitor at least one condition from the one or more conditions.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the power management component is configured to, when stopping, undoing, or reversing at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turn on and/or re-activate at least one of the one or more electronic components of the system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the measurements comprise measured results at various frequencies, and wherein the power management component is configured to compare the measured results to corresponding references at least at one or more frequencies.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to:

compare energy at one or more frequencies with reference energy values corresponding to the one or more frequencies; and

determine whether a signal is present at the one or more frequencies or within a corresponding one or more frequency bands.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on measuring of voltage or current at the communication port.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on detecting presence or absence of a signal on the signal path.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port, based on evaluating signal characteristics of a signal present on the signal path.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, when monitoring the one or more conditions, periodically re-determine at least one condition of the one or more conditions upon the initiation of the at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

12. A method comprising:

managing power use in a communication device based on measurements associated with a signal path used for communication by the communication device via a communication port, wherein the managing comprises:

determining, based on the measurements, connectivity related information associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port;

applying, based on the connectivity related information, one or more power use reduction measures, wherein the one or more power use reduction measures comprise transitioning between different power related states; and

monitoring one or more conditions to determine when to stop, undo, or reverse at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

generating an alert regarding at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port; and

applying based on the alert at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, upon application of at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turning off or deactivating one or more components of the communication device.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising configuring at least one component of the communication device to remain active and to continue to monitor at least one condition from the one or more conditions.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, when stopping, undoing, or reversing at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turning on and/or re-activating at least one component of the communication device.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the measurements comprise measured results at various frequencies, and further comprising comparing the measured results to corresponding references at least at one or more frequencies.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

comparing energy at one or more frequencies with reference energy values corresponding to the one or more frequencies; and

determining whether a signal is present at the one or more frequencies or within a corresponding one or more frequency bands.

19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determining at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port based on measuring of voltage or current at the communication port.

20. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determining at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port based on detecting presence or absence of a signal on the signal path.

21. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, when monitoring the one or more conditions, determining at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port, based on evaluating signal characteristics of a signal present on the signal path.

22. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, when monitoring the one or more conditions, periodically re-determining at least one condition of the one or more conditions upon the initiation of the at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.
