Abstract

A lead may comprise a multiple filar wire comprising an inner core, an inner layer and an outer layer, where a portion of the inner layer is wound in a first orientation and the inner layer comprises a first number of filars of wire and where a portion of the outer layer is wound in a second orientation opposite the first orientation and the outer layer comprises a second number of filars of wire, the second number of filars of wire being greater than the first number of filars of wire. The lead may also comprise insulation covering a portion of the multiple filar wire, the portion of the multiple filar wire and the insulation comprising a helical coil structure wound in the first orientation and an anchor formed by the inner core, inner layer and outer layer extending away from the portion of the multiple filar wire, wherein the anchor comprises no helical coil structure.

Claims (59)

1 . A lead comprising:

an inner core;

an inner layer; and

an outer layer,

wherein a portion of the inner layer is wound in a first orientation and the inner layer comprises a first number of filars of wire,

wherein a portion of the outer layer is wound in a second orientation different from the first orientation and the outer layer comprises a second number of filars of wire, the second number of filars of wire being greater than the first number of filars of wire, wherein a portion of the inner layer and outer layer are wound into a helical coil structure; and

an anchor formed by the inner core, inner layer and outer layer extending away from the helical coil structure.

2 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the helical coil structure is wound in the first orientation.

3 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the helical coil structure comprises insulation.

4 . The lead of claim 3 , wherein the anchor comprises no helical coil structure.

5 . The lead of claim 4 , wherein the anchor is bent relative to the helical coil structure between 40 degrees and 100 degrees.

6 . The lead of claim 4 further comprising a weld formed on an end of the anchor, wherein the weld prevents the inner core, inner layer and the outer layer from coming apart.

7 . The lead of claim 4 , wherein the anchor comprises at least a portion of an electrode.

8 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the first number of filars of wire comprises between two and ten filars of wire.

9 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the second number of filars of wire comprises between seven and fifteen filars of wire.

10 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the first number of filars of wire comprises ten filars of wire.

11 . The lead of claim 10 , wherein the second number of filars of wire comprises fifteen filars of wire.

12 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the first orientation comprises a left-hand lay.

13 . The lead of claim 12 , wherein the second orientation comprises a right-hand lay.

14 . The lead of claim 1 , wherein the first orientation comprises a right-hand lay.

15 . The lead of claim 14 , wherein the second orientation comprises a right-hand lay.

16 . A lead comprising:

an inner core;

an inner layer; and

an outer layer,

wherein a portion of the inner layer is wound in a first orientation and the inner layer comprises a first number of filars of wire,

wherein a portion of the outer layer is wound in a second orientation different from the first orientation and the outer layer comprises a second number of filars of wire, the second number of filars of wire being greater than the first number of filars of wire, wherein a portion of the inner core extends beyond the inner and outer layers forming an anchor and wherein at least a portion of the anchor is uninsulated forming an electrode.

17 . A lead comprising:

an inner core;

an inner layer, wherein at least a portion of a length of the inner layer is wound in a first orientation;

an outer layer, wherein at least a portion of a length of the outer layer is wound in a second orientation different from the first orientation;

wherein the portion of the length of the outer layer and the portion of the length of the inner layer comprise a helical coil structure wound in the first orientation;

insulation covering at least a portion of the helical structure; and

an anchor formed from the inner core, inner layer and outer core and extending from the helical structure, wherein the anchor comprises no helical coil structure.

18 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the helical structure comprises a length and a portion of the length of the helical structure is free of the insulation.

19 . The lead of claim 18 , wherein the portion of the length of the helical structure free of the insulation comprises an electrode.

20 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the anchor is bent relative to the helical coil structure between about 40 degrees and 100 degrees.

21 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the inner layer comprises a first number of filars of wire of between two and ten filars of wire.

22 . The lead of claim 21 , wherein the outer layer comprises a second number of filars of wire of between seven and fifteen filars of wire.

23 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the inner layer comprises ten filars of wire.

24 . The lead of claim 23 , wherein the outer layer comprises fifteen filars of wire.

25 . The lead of claim 17 further comprising a weld formed on an end of the anchor, wherein the weld prevents the inner core, inner layer and the outer layer from coming apart.

26 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the first orientation comprises a left-hand lay.

27 . The lead of claim 17 , wherein the first orientation comprises a right-hand lay.

28 . A lead comprising:

an inner core comprising a single filar;

an inner layer wound in a first orientation around the inner core;

an outer layer wound in a second orientation opposite the first orientation;

insulation covering a portion of a length of the outer layer and inner layer and a portion of a length of the inner core, wherein the insulation, the portion of the length of the outer layer and inner layer and the portion of the length of the inner core comprise a helical coil structure; and

an anchor formed by the inner core, the inner layer and the outer layer, wherein the anchor comprises no helical coil structure.
