Abstract

An apparatus includes a housing, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. At least a portion of the flow control mechanism is movably disposed within the housing. The apparatus further includes an inlet port and an outlet port, and defines a fluid reservoir. The outlet port is fluidically coupled to a second fluid reservoir and is fluidically isolated from the first fluid reservoir. The actuator is configured to move the flow control mechanism between a first configuration, in which the inlet port is placed in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir such that the fluid reservoir receives a first flow of bodily-fluid, and a second configuration, in which the inlet port is placed in fluid communication with the outlet port.

Claims (56)

1 . A blood sampling system, comprising:

a blood sampling pathway including a lumen-containing device configured to be coupled to a patient on a first end and a sample needle on a second end; and

a blood transfer device integrated on the blood sampling pathway between the first end and the second end of the blood sampling pathway, the blood transfer device comprising:

a housing including an inlet port coupled with the blood sampling pathway toward the first end and an outlet port coupled with the blood sampling pathway toward the second end;

a reservoir disposed in the housing and in fluid communication with the inlet port;

a first seal member defining at least a portion of the reservoir, the first seal member configured to facilitate a pressure differential in the reservoir operable to cause a flow of blood from the inlet port to the first seal member while air flows from inside the housing to a volume outside the housing, the first seal member and the reservoir collectively configured to sequester the blood in the reservoir;

a sampling flow path defined by an inner surface of the housing that includes a first end in fluid communication with the inlet port and a second end in fluid communication with the outlet port; and

a second seal member disposed in the housing, the second seal member configured, in a first position, to obstruct at least a portion of the sampling flow path, the second seal member configured to be moved to a second position in which the inlet port is in fluid communication with the sampling flow path to convey a subsequent flow of blood through the housing from the inlet port to the outlet port that bypasses the reservoir and the blood sequestered therein.

2 . The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir is configured to receive a first amount of blood.

3 . The blood sampling system of claim 2 , wherein the sampling flow path is configured to convey a second amount of blood that bypasses at least a portion of the first amount of blood in the reservoir as the second amount of blood flows from the inlet port to the outlet port.

4 . The blood sampling system of claim 3 , wherein the sampling flow path is further configured to convey at least a portion of the second amount of blood in response to at least a portion of the first amount of blood being received in the reservoir.

The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which blood flows from the inlet port into the reservoir, the blood transfer device has a second state in which at least a portion of a first amount of blood is sequestered in the reservoir and at least a portion of a second amount of blood flows through the blood sampling pathway and bypasses at least a portion of the first amount of blood in the reservoir.

The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which (i) blood flows into the reservoir and toward the first seal member, (ii) air flows out of the housing away from the first seal member, and (iii) second seal member is in the first position to obstruct at least a portion of the sampling flow path, and

the blood transfer device has a second state in which the second seal member is in the second position to convey the subsequent flow of blood through the housing from the inlet port to the outlet port while at least a portion of a first amount of blood is sequestered in the reservoir.

7 . The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the blood sampling pathway includes:

a first tubing including a first end configured to be coupled to the lumen-containing device and a second end configured to be coupled to the inlet port of the blood transfer device; and

a second tubing including a first end configured to be coupled to the outlet port of the blood transfer device and a second end configured to be coupled to the sample needle.

The blood sampling system of claim 7 , wherein the blood transfer device is configured to transition from a first state to a second state in response to the reservoir receiving at least a portion of a first amount of blood, the second seal member being in the second position when the blood transfer device is in the second state such that the sampling flow path establishes fluid communication between the first tubing and the second tubing to convey at least a portion of a second amount of blood from the lumen-containing device to the sample needle while bypassing at least a portion of the first amount of blood in the reservoir.

9 . The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the blood transfer device in a first state is configured such that air flows away from the first seal member and out of the housing while blood flows from the inlet port, into the reservoir, and toward the first seal member.

10 . A system, comprising:

a blood sampling pathway including a lumen-containing device, a first end portion of the lumen-containing device configured to be coupled to a patient and a second end portion of the lumen-containing device configured to be coupled to a sample needle; and

a blood transfer device integrated on and in fluid communication with the blood sampling pathway, the blood transfer device comprising:

a housing including an inlet port coupled with the first end portion of the blood sampling pathway and an outlet port coupled with the second end portion of the blood sampling pathway;

a reservoir in the housing and in fluid communication with the inlet port;

a first seal member defining at least a portion of the reservoir, the first seal member configured to (i) facilitate a pressure differential in the reservoir operable to cause blood to flow from the inlet port to the first seal member while air flows from a volume inside the housing to a volume outside the housing, and (ii) form a seal with a wall of the housing operable to sequester a volume of blood in the reservoir;

a sampling flow path defined by the housing, the sampling flow path having a first end in fluid communication with the inlet port and a second end in fluid communication with the outlet port; and

a second seal member disposed in the housing, the second seal member configured, in a first position, to obstruct at least a portion of the sampling flow path, the second seal member configured, in a second position, such that a subsequent volume of blood flows from the inlet port through the sampling flow path to the outlet port and bypasses at least a portion of the volume of blood sequestered in the reservoir.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the blood transfer device is configured such that at least a portion of the subsequent volume of blood flows to the outlet port in response to the reservoir receiving at least a portion of the volume of blood.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which blood flows from the inlet port, into the reservoir, and toward the first seal member.

The system of claim 12 , wherein the blood transfer device has a second state in which (i) the reservoir sequesters the volume of blood, (ii) the second seal member is in the second position, and (iii) at least a portion of the subsequent volume of blood flows through the blood sampling pathway and bypasses at least a portion of the volume of blood sequestered in the reservoir.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which (i) the blood flows into the reservoir toward the first seal member, and (ii) the air flows out of the housing away from the first seal member.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the blood transfer device has a second state in which the first seal member prevents air outside of the reservoir from communicating with the blood in the reservoir.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the blood transfer device is configured to transition from a first state to a second state based on at least a portion of the volume of blood being in the reservoir.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the blood sampling pathway includes:

a first tubing including a first end configured to be coupled to the lumen-containing device and a second end configured to be coupled to the inlet port of the blood transfer device; and

a second tubing including a first end configured to be coupled to the outlet port of the blood transfer device and a second end configured to be coupled to the sample needle.

The system of claim 17 , wherein the blood transfer device in the second state is configured such that the second seal member is in the second position to allow at least a portion of the subsequent volume of blood to flow from the lumen-containing device, through the first tubing, the sampling flow path, and the second tubing, to the sample needle while bypassing at least a portion of the volume of blood in the reservoir.

19 . A system, comprising:

a blood sampling pathway including a lumen-containing device, a first end portion of the lumen-containing device configured to be coupled to a patient and a second end portion of the lumen-containing device configured to be coupled to a sample needle; and

a blood transfer device integrated on and in fluid communication with the blood sampling pathway, the blood transfer device comprising:

a housing including an inlet port coupled with the first end portion of the blood sampling pathway and an outlet port coupled with the second end portion of the blood sampling pathway;

a reservoir in the housing;

a first seal member defining at least a portion of the reservoir, the first seal member operable in (i) a pressure differential being formed in the reservoir that facilitates a flow of blood from the inlet port to the first seal member and (ii) air being conveyed from inside the housing to a volume outside the housing, the first seal member and the reservoir collectively configured to sequester the blood in the reservoir;

a sampling flow path defined by an inner surface of the housing; and

a second seal member disposed in the housing, the second seal member configured, in a first position, to obstruct at least a portion of the sampling flow path, the second seal member configured to be moved to a second position in which the inlet port is in fluid communication with the sampling flow path to convey a subsequent flow of blood through the housing from the inlet port to the outlet port while bypassing the reservoir and the blood sequestered therein.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the reservoir is configured to receive a first amount of blood.

The system of claim 20 , wherein in response to the reservoir receiving at least a portion of the first amount of blood, the second seal member is placed in the second position to allow the sampling flow path to convey a second amount of blood that (i) flows from the inlet port to the outlet port, and (ii) bypasses at least a portion of the first amount of blood in the reservoir.

22 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which blood flows from the inlet port, into the reservoir, and toward the first seal member.

23 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the blood transfer device has a second state in which the blood is sequestered in the reservoir.

24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the blood transfer device in the second state is configured such that at least a portion of the subsequent flow of blood flows through the blood sampling pathway and bypasses at least a portion of the blood in the reservoir.

25 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the blood transfer device has a first state in which (i) blood flows into the reservoir toward the first seal member, and (ii) air flows out of the blood transfer device away from the first seal member.

26 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the blood transfer device has a second state in which the first seal member prevents air outside of the reservoir from communicating with the blood in the reservoir.

The system of claim 19 , wherein the blood transfer device is configured to transition from a first state to a second state based on an amount of blood in the reservoir, the second seal member being in the first position when the blood transfer device is in the first state and being in the second position when the blood transfer device is in the second state.

28 . The blood sampling system of claim 1 , wherein the second seal member is configured to be moved independent of the first seal member.

29 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the second seal member is configured to be moved independent of the first seal member.

30 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the second seal member is configured to be moved independent of the first seal member.
