Abstract

Apparatus for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in humans, the apparatus comprising: a housing; stimulation means mounted within the housing for electrically stimulating nerves; an electrode array releasably mounted to the housing and connectable to the stimulation means, the electrode array comprising a plurality of electrodes for electrical stimulation of nerves; control means mounted to the housing and electrically connected to the stimulation means for controlling at least one characteristic of the stimulation means; monitoring means mounted to the housing and electrically connected to the stimulation means for monitoring at least one characteristic of the stimulation means; user interface means mounted to the housing and electrically connected to the control means for controlling the stimulation means; display means mounted to the housing and electrically connected to the control means and the monitoring means for displaying the status of the stimulations means; and a strap attached to the housing; wherein the strap is configured to hold the housing, stimulation means and electrode array at a specific anatomical location to treat pain.

Claims (20)

1 . A stimulation device for treating pain in a user, the device comprising:

a wearable component configured for removable attachment to an outer skin surface of a calf of a user;

an electrode array coupled to the wearable component, the electrode array comprising first and second electrodes electrically connected to each other and third and fourth electrodes electrically connected to each other, wherein the first and second electrodes are positioned between the third and fourth electrodes; and

an energy source coupled to the electrode and configured to generate at least one electrical impulse and to transmit the at least one electrical impulse transcutaneously from the electrode through the outer skin surface of the user to a target nerve within the calf of the user.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the wearable component comprises a strap having a first end and a second end configured for removable coupling to the first end.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second electrodes have a substantially equal surface area.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is spaced at least about 40 mm from the third electrode and the second electrode is spaced at least about 40 mm from the fourth electrode.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical impulse is sufficient to stimulate one or more of the L4, L5 and S2 sensory dermatomes.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the pain is associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

7 . A method for treating pain in a user, the method comprising:

contacting an outer skin surface of a calf of a user with an electrode array, the electrode array comprising first and second electrodes electrically connected to each other and third and fourth electrodes electrically connected to each other, wherein the first and second electrodes are positioned between the third and fourth electrodes;

attaching the electrode to the calf with a wearable component;

applying at least one electrical impulse to the electrode; and

transmitting the electrical impulse through the outer skin surface to a target nerve within the calf of the user.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising wrapping a strap around the calf and attaching a first end of the strap to a second end of the strap to contact the electrode to the outer skin surface.

9 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising applying a positive polarity to the first and second electrodes and applying a negative polarity to the third and further electrodes.

10 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising positioning the first electrode on the outer skin surface at least about 40 mm from the third electrode and positioning the second electrode on the outer skin surface at least about 40 mm from the fourth electrode.

11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the electrical impulse is sufficient to stimulate at least one or more of the L4, L5 and S2 sensory dermatomes.

12 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the pain is associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

13 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising applying the electrical impulse at a first amplitude for a period of time and increasing the electrical impulse to a second amplitude after the period of time.
