Abstract

Transluminal access system includes a stent delivery catheter having a handle control mechanism. The catheter comprises a number of components for establishing an initial penetration between adjacent body lumens and subsequently implanting a stent or other luminal anchor therebetween. Manipulation of the stent components is achieved using control mechanisms on the handle while the handle is attached to an endoscope which provides access to a first body lumen.

Claims (38)

1 . A device, comprising:

a catheter configured to support a self-expanding drainage device;

a retractable sheath slidably disposed over the catheter, the retractable sheath configured to deploy the self-expanding drainage device from the catheter;

a first lock having an engaged position, the first lock when in the engaged position configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter, wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a first time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter; and

a lock stop configured to engage the first lock in the engaged position at a first position to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally, past the first position, with respect to the catheter upon initial release of the first lock,

wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a second time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally past the first position,

wherein the first position corresponds to a position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is partially deployed.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first position is marked by a visual or a tactile indicia.

3 . The device of claim 1 , comprising a second lock configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter.

4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the retractable sheath can move proximally with respect to the catheter to a second position upon release of the second lock, wherein the second position is more proximal than the first position.

5 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the second position corresponds to another position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is fully deployed.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein, when in the first position, the retractable sheath releases a portion of the self-expanding drainage device from constraint thereby allowing the portion of the self-expanding drainage device to expand into a distal flange.

7 . A device, comprising:

a catheter configured to support a self-expanding drainage device;

a retractable sheath slidably disposed over the catheter, the retractable sheath configured to deploy the self-expanding drainage device from the catheter;

a handle coupled to the catheter, the handle comprising:

a first lock having an engaged position, the first lock when in the engaged position configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter, wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a first time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter; and a first lock release configured to release the first lock; and

a lock stop configured to engage the first lock in the engaged position at a first position to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally, past the first position, with respect to the catheter upon initial release of the first lock,

wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a second time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally past the first position,

wherein the first position corresponds to a position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is partially deployed.

8 . The device of claim 7 , comprising a second lock configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter, the handle comprising a second lock release configured to releasee the second lock.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the retractable sheath can move proximally with respect to the catheter to a second position upon release of the second lock, wherein the second position is more proximal than the first position.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the second position corresponds to another position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is fully deployed.

11 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the second position is marked by a visual or a tactile indicia.

12 . The device of claim 7 , wherein the retractable sheath can move proximally with respect to the catheter to a second position, wherein when in the first position, the retractable sheath releases a first portion of the self-expanding drainage device from constraint thereby allowing the first portion of the self-expanding drainage device to expand into a distal flange, and wherein when in the second position, the retractable sheath releases a second portion of the self-expanding drainage device from constraint thereby allowing the second portion of the self-expanding drainage device to expand into a proximal flange with a conduit therebetween.

13 . A device, comprising:

a catheter configured to support a self-expanding drainage device;

a tissue penetrating tip disposed on a distal end of the catheter;

a retractable sheath slidably disposed over the catheter, the retractable sheath configured to deploy the self-expanding drainage device from the catheter;

a handle coupled to the catheter, the handle comprising:

a first lock having an engaged position, the first lock when in the engaged position configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter, wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a first time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter; and

a lock stop configured to engage the first lock in the engaged position at a first position to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally, past the first position, with respect to the catheter upon initial release of the first lock, wherein the first lock is configured to be released from the engaged position a second time to allow movement of the retractable sheath proximally past the first position,

wherein the first position corresponds to a position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is partially deployed.

14 . The device of claim 13 , comprising a second lock configured to prevent movement of the retractable sheath proximally with respect to the catheter, wherein the retractable sheath can move proximally with respect to the catheter to a second position upon release of the second lock, wherein the second position is more proximal than the first position.

15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the second position corresponds to another position of the retractable sheath with respect to the catheter in which the self-expanding drainage device is fully deployed.

16 . The device of claim 15 , wherein when in the first position, the retractable sheath releases a first portion of the self-expanding drainage device from constraint thereby allowing the first portion of the self-expanding drainage device to expand into a distal flange, and wherein when in the second position, the retractable sheath releases a second portion of the self-expanding drainage device from constraint thereby allowing the second portion of the self-expanding drainage device to expand into a proximal flange.

17 . The device of claim 13 , wherein the tissue penetrating tip is an electrosurgical tip.

18 . The device of claim 17 , wherein the electrosurgical tip is tapered at a distal end.
