Abstract

A transverse electric field type liquid crystal display panel includes a pair of substrates opposed with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween. A plurality of sub-pixels having at least one curved portion in a display area are provided in a matrix on one side of the pair of substrates, and a pair of electrodes having at least one curved portion are formed in the plurality of sub-pixels. A light shield layer shielding a non-display area positioned on an outer peripheral side of the display area and between the plurality of sub-pixels is formed on the other side of the pair of substrates. The light shield layer of the non-display area is formed in a shape in which the outermost peripheral side of the display area is rectangular.

Claims (40)

1. A liquid crystal display panel comprising:

a first substrate and a second substrate opposed to each other with a liquid crystal layer therebetween;

scan lines extending overall in a first direction, the scan lines including a first scan line;

signal lines extending overall in a second direction crossing the first direction, the signal lines including a first signal line and a second signal line;

a plurality of pixels that are surrounded by the scan lines and the signal lines and that are arranged in a matrix, the plurality of pixels including

a first pixel having a first opening, a first thin film transistor coupled to the first scan line, the first signal line, and a first pixel electrode, the first pixel being disposed in an outermost area in a display area in the first direction, and

a second pixel having a second opening, a second thin film transistor coupled to the first scan line, the second signal line, and a second pixel electrode, the second pixel being disposed in an area other than the outermost area in the display area, the first pixel and the second pixel being adjacent to each other in the first direction; and

a light shield layer,

wherein

the light shield layer includes:

a first light shield portion including an outermost light shield that covers an outermost side of the first pixel in the first direction;

a second light shield portion that covers the first thin film transistor and the first signal line, the second light shield portion covering an entire width of the first signal line in the first direction; and

a third light shield portion that covers the second thin film transistor and the second signal line, the third light shield portion covering an entire width of the second signal line in the first direction,

the first light shield portion has a first left edge facing the second light shield portion in the first direction,

the second light shield portion has a second right edge facing the first light shield portion and a second left edge facing the third light shielding portion, in the first direction,

the third light shield portion has a third right edge facing the second light shield portion in the first direction,

a length of the first opening between the first left edge of the first light shield portion and the second right edge of the second light shield portion in the first direction is less than a length of a second opening between the second left edge of the second light shield portion and the third right edge of the third light shield portion in the first direction,

the liquid crystal display panel includes:

a lower electrode;

an upper electrode that is closer to the liquid crystal layer than the lower electrode is; and

an insulating layer between the lower electrode and the upper electrode,

the upper electrode has a slit,

the first light shield portion overlaps part of the slit, and

the slit is not overlapped by the second light shield portion and the third light shield portion.

2. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 1 , wherein

a common electrode is opposed to the pixel electrode, and

the pixel electrode or the common electrode has a slit.

3. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 2 , wherein

the common electrode has the slit, and

the common electrode is the upper electrode, which is disposed above the pixel electrode and opposed to the pixel electrode, which is the lower electrode.

4. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 3 , wherein

part of the slit of the first pixel overlaps the light shield layer.

5. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 1 , wherein

the first substrate has a first surface side and a second surface side that faces the liquid crystal layer, and

the scan lines and the signal lines are overlapped by the light shield layer, and are disposed on the second surface side of the first substrate.

6. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 5 , wherein

the second substrate has a first surface side that faces the liquid crystal layer, and

the light shield layer is disposed on the first surface side of the second substrate.

7. The liquid crystal display panel according to claim 6 , wherein

the signal lines are bent along a shape of the pixels or the slit.
