Abstract

A latch, including: a claw movably mounted to the latch for movement between an unlatched position and a latched position; a pawl movably mounted to the latch for movement between an engaged position and a disengaged position, wherein the pawl prevents the claw from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the pawl is in the engaged position; a hold open lever configured for movement between a first position wherein the hold open lever does not block movement of the pawl and a second position, wherein the hold open lever prevents the pawl from moving from the disengaged position to the engaged position; a gear rotatably mounted to the latch for movement between a first position and a second position, the gear having a cam portion that is configured to engage the pawl and move the pawl to the disengaged position as the gear rotates from the first position to the second position; and a spring for biasing the hold open lever into the second position as the gear is rotated into the second position, the spring being operably coupled to the pawl at one end and the hold open lever at a second end.

Claims (28)

1 . A latch, comprising:

a claw movably mounted to the latch for movement between an unlatched position and a latched position;

a pawl movably mounted to the latch for movement between an engaged position and a disengaged position, wherein the pawl prevents the claw from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the pawl is in the engaged position;

a hold open lever configured for movement between a first position wherein the hold open lever does not block movement of the pawl and a second position, wherein the hold open lever prevents the pawl from moving from the disengaged position to the engaged position;

a gear rotatably mounted to the latch for movement between a first position and a second position, the gear having a cam portion having a first portion that is configured to contact the pawl and move the pawl to the disengaged position as the gear rotates from the first position to the second position and the hold open lever contacts a second portion of the cam portion when the hold open lever is in the second position in order to prevent the gear from rotating from the second position to the first position; and

a spring for biasing the hold open lever into the second position as the gear is rotated into the second position, the spring being operably coupled to the pawl at one end and the hold open lever at a second end.

2 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the gear meshingly engages a worm that is rotationally driven by a motor, the motor when actuated rotates the gear via the worm.

3 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the gear is spring biased into the first position by a spring.

4 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the latch has a housing and the housing includes a hold open stopper portion that engages a portion of the hold open lever that sets a limit of rotation of the hold open lever.

5 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the latch has a housing and the latch includes a bumper that is secured to the housing, the bumper contacts the cam portion when the gear is rotated into either the first position or the second position.

6 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the claw is spring biased into the unlatched position by a spring.

7 . The latch as in claim 2 , wherein the gear is spring biased into the first position by a spring.

8 . The latch as in claim 7 , wherein the latch has a housing and the housing includes a hold open stopper portion that engages a portion of the hold open lever that sets a limit of rotation of the hold open lever.

9 . The latch as in claim 8 , wherein the latch has a housing and the latch includes a bumper that is secured to the housing, the bumper contacts the cam portion when the gear is rotated into either the first position or the second position.

10 . The latch as in claim 9 , wherein the claw is spring biased into the unlatched position by a spring.

11 . The latch as in claim 3 , wherein the latch has a housing and the housing includes a hold open stopper portion that engages a portion of the hold open lever that sets a limit of rotation of the hold open lever.

12 . A method of disengaging a pawl from engagement with a claw a latch, comprising:

pivotally mounting a claw movably to the latch for movement between an unlatched position and a latched position;

pivotally mounting a pawl to the latch for movement between an engaged position and a disengaged position, wherein the pawl prevents the claw from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the pawl is in the engaged position;

movably mounting a hold open lever to the latch for movement between a first position wherein the hold open lever does not block movement of the pawl and a second position, wherein the hold open lever prevents the pawl from moving from the disengaged position to the engaged position;

rotatably mounting a gear to the latch for movement between a first position and a second position, the gear having a cam portion having a first portion that is configured to contact the pawl and move the pawl to the disengaged position as the gear rotates from the first position to the second position and the hold open lever contacts a second portion of the cam portion when the hold open lever is in the second position in order to prevent the gear from rotating from the second position to the first position; and

biasing the hold open lever into the second position by a spring as the gear is rotated into the second position, the spring being operably coupled to the pawl at one end and the hold open lever at a second end.

13 . The method as in claim 12 , wherein the gear meshingly engages a worm that is rotationally driven by a motor, the motor when actuated rotates the gear via the worm.

14 . The method as in claim 12 , wherein the gear is spring biased into the first position by a spring.

15 . The method as in claim 12 , wherein the latch has a housing and the housing includes a hold open stopper portion that engages a portion of the hold open lever that sets a limit of rotation of the hold open lever.

16 . The method as in claim 12 , wherein the latch has a housing and the latch includes a bumper that is secured to the housing, the bumper contacts the cam portion when the gear is rotated into either the first position or the second position.

17 . The method as in claim 12 , wherein the hold open lever only contacts the second portion of the cam portion when the hold open lever is in the second position only after a power release of the latch.

18 . The latch as in claim 1 , wherein the hold open lever only contacts the second portion of the cam portion when the hold open lever is in the second position only after a power release of the latch.
