Abstract

An introducing device for locating a tissue region and deploying an electrode is shown and described. The introducing device may include an outer sheath. An inner sheath may be disposed within the outer sheath. The inner sheath may be configured to engage an implantable electrode. In an example, the inner sheath may comprise a stimulation probe having an uninsulated portion at or near a distal end of the delivery sheath. The outer sheath may be coupled to a power source or stimulation signal generating circuitry at a proximal end. A clinician may control application of the stimulation signal to a tissue region via the outer sheath.

Claims (28)

1 . An introducer system for comprising:

a needle assembly comprising an outer sheath having an outer circumference and defining a lumen, an inner sheath carried within the lumen, and a plurality of test electrodes positioned along the outer circumference and configured to electrically communicate with an electrical stimulus generator unit;

a self-anchoring helical stimulation lead carried within the inner sheath and having a conductive distal anchor,

a deployment mechanism cooperating relative to the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead and the needle assembly to deploy the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead out of the needle assembly at a selected position identified by at least one of the test electrodes during positioning and testing of the needle assembly; and

wherein the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead remains confined within the needle assembly prior to deployment of the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead and the distal anchor remains deployed in tissue after deployment of the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead.

2 . The introducer system of claim 1 , wherein the deployment mechanism comprises a plunger or a spacer.

3 . The introducer system of claim 1 , wherein the deployment mechanism comprises a plunger and a spacer.

4 . The introducer system of claim 1 , wherein two or more test electrodes are provided as an array spaced axially along the outer circumference.

5 . An introducer system comprising:

a needle assembly comprising an outer sheath having an outer circumference and defining a lumen, an inner sheath carried within the lumen during positioning and testing, and a plurality of test electrodes positioned along an axial length of the outer circumference of the outer sheath at spaced-apart intervals;

a self-anchoring helical stimulation lead carried within the inner sheath and having a distal anchoring electrode through which stimulation can be delivered,

wherein at least one spacer is movable along an axis of the needle assembly so as to retract the outer sheath at intervals that correspond to one or more positions of the test electrodes; and

wherein the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead is deployable at one of the positions of one of the test electrodes.

6 . The introducer system according to claim 5 further comprising a quick disconnection mechanism for maintaining contact between a proximal end of the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead and an electrical stimulus generator unit.

7 . The introducer system according to claim 6 , wherein the quick disconnection mechanism comprises at least one aperture or slot and wherein a proximal end of an electrode on the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead is received in the aperture or slot.

8 . The introducer system according to claim 6 , wherein the quick disconnection mechanism comprises at least one magnet.

9 . The introducer system according to claim 6 , wherein the quick disconnection mechanism comprises an insulation displacement connector.

10 . The introducer system according to claim 6 , wherein the quick disconnection mechanism comprises at least one biasing member.

11 . The introducer system of claim 6 , wherein when a test mode of the electrical stimulus generator unit is activated, at least one of the test electrodes delivers test stimulation at one or more desired positions.

12 . The introducer system of claim 6 , wherein the needle assembly can be repeatedly repositioned without deploying the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead.

13 . The introducer system of claim 6 , wherein, as the self-anchoring helical stimulation lead is deployed from the needle assembly, the distal anchor is exposed from the needle assembly and anchors at a desired position.

14 . An introducer system comprising:

a helical lead having a conductive distal anchor; and

a needle assembly comprising an outer sheath having an outer circumference and defining a bore, an inner sheath carried within the bore during positioning and testing, and at least one test electrode positioned along the outer circumference;

wherein the helical lead is carried with the inner sheath until the helical lead is deployed.

15 . The introducer system according to claim 14 , wherein the inner sheath comprises a plunger that is selectively moveable so as to deploy distal anchor at a predetermined position by moving in concert the outer sheath and the helical lead.

16 . The introducer system according to claim 15 further comprising a lock to restrict movement of the plunger prior to deploying the helical lead.

17 . The introducer system according to claim 16 , wherein the helical lead comprises an electrode and the electrode cooperates to associate a desired position with one of the at least one test electrode and wherein the plunger cooperates with the needle assembly to deploy the helical lead at the desired position.
