Abstract

A breast pump system comprises at least one wearable milk collection hub connected via an air line to a combined external air pump and control unit. Each milk collection hub comprises: (a) a breast shield made up of a breast flange and a nipple tunnel; (b) a flexible diaphragm that is configured to prevent milk from reaching the external air pump; (c) an outer shell that is configured to removably attach to the breast shield, such that, when attached, the breast shield and outer shell form a vessel for collecting milk; and (d) a diaphragm cap that is configured to be secured over the diaphragm, forms part of the front face of the outer shell, and includes a port connected to the air line.

Claims (65)

1. A breast pump system, comprising:

a wearable milk collection hub configured to be connected to the control unit by an air tube, the wearable milk collection hub comprises:

a transparent breast shield comprising a breast flange and a nipple tunnel;

a transparent outer shell configured to be removably attached to the breast shield, wherein an interior volume between the outer shell and the breast shield defines a vessel in which expressed milk is collected;

a diaphragm configured to be arranged concentric with the nipple tunnel and configured to be removably attached to the outer shell; and

a diaphragm cap configured to be removably attached to a front surface of the outer shell to cover and seal the diaphragm, the diaphragm cap comprising an air port configured to receive the air tube.

2. The breast pump system of claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm is configured to lie over an end of the nipple tunnel.

3. The breast pump system of claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm is configured to form an end of the nipple tunnel.

4. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the diaphragm comprising a cylindrical side wall configured to extend parallel to the nipple tunnel.

5. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the diaphragm comprising an annular wall that is configured to be perpendicular to the nipple tunnel.

6. The breast pump system of claim 1 , further comprising an air tube connection component comprising a tube splitter coupled to the air tube.

7. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the outer shell comprising milk volume scale markings.

8. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the control unit comprising an air pump and a user interface.

9. The breast pump system of claim 8 , the user interface comprising:

a power on/off button located toward atop of the control unit configured to power on and off the breast pump system; and

multiple buttons configured to adjust a level of negative air pressure generated and a pump/pause button configured to interrupt a pumping process without powering off the breast pump system, the multiple buttons and the pump/pause button being located in an arced series below the power on/off button.

10. The breast pump system of claim 9 , the user interface further comprising an arced series of LEDs configured to provide visual indication of a function of the breast pump system.

11. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the wearable milk collection hub further comprising a non-return valve.

12. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the outer shell comprising a milk pouring opening located toward atop of the outer shell and configured to be closed by a removable part.

13. The breast pump system of claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm cap is generally circular and configured to be located at a central region of the outer shell.

14. The breast pump system of claim 1 , the diaphragm cap comprising a pair of recessed finger grip features for removing the diaphragm cap from the outer shell.

15. The breast pump system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an air tube connection assembly, comprising:

a tube splitter;

a first tube configured to connect to the control unit;

a second tube configured to connect to the wearable milk collection hub; and

a third tube.

16. The breast pump system of claim 1 , wherein when the diaphragm is in a relaxed state, at least a portion of the diaphragm extends over and lies adjacent to a milk port configured so that the expressed milk flows into the vessel through the milk port.

17. A wearable milk collection hub, comprising:

a breast shield comprising a breast flange and a nipple tunnel;

a diaphragm configured to deform to create negative air pressure in the nipple tunnel;

an outer shell configured to be removably attached to the breast shield to form a vessel for collecting expressed milk, the outer shell comprising:

a rear end comprising an edge configured to seal with the breast shield, the rear end being configured to face a user's breast when in use;

a front end opposite the rear end and remote from the breast shield;

a curved surface curving from the edge of the rear end to the front end; and

a milk pouring opening located toward a top of the outer shell; and

a diaphragm cap configured to be removably attached to a surface of the outer shell external to the vessel at the front end to seal the diaphragm, the diaphragm cap comprising an air port configured to receive an air tube from an external air pump.

18. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , wherein the diaphragm cap is generally circular and configured to be located at a central region on the curved surface of the outer shell.

19. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , wherein the diaphragm and the outer shell are transparent.

20. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , the diaphragm cap further comprising a flat portion configured to allow the wearable milk collection hub rest on a flat surface.

21. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , the outer shell further comprising milk volume scale markings configured to indicate a volume of the expressed milk collected in the vessel.

22. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , wherein the diaphragm cap is configured such that the air port can be located above the nipple tunnel.

23. The wearable milk collection hub of claim 17 , the diaphragm cap further comprising a recessed finger grip feature for removing the diaphragm cap from the outer shell.

24. The breast pump system of claim 17 , wherein when the diaphragm is in a relaxed state, at least a portion of the diaphragm extends over and lies adjacent to a milk port configured so that the expressed milk flows into the vessel through the milk port.

25. A breast pump system, comprising:

a control unit configured to generate negative air pressure;

a wearable milk collection hub configured to be connected to the control unit, the wearable milk collection hub comprising:

a breast shield;

an outer shell comprising a curved front surface and configured to be removably attached to the breast shield to form a vessel for collecting expressed milk;

a non-return valve configured to pass the expressed milk in one direction into the vessel;

a diaphragm; and

a diaphragm cap configured to be removably attached to the outer shell on the curved front surface and arranged opposite to the breast shield and configured to seal the diaphragm, the diaphragm cap comprising:
