Abstract

A method and apparatus for highlighting a program listing in a set of program listings based on selection criteria. The selection criteria may indicate that the a broadcaster has agreed to pay a service provider in return for the service provider ensuring that a program listing, corresponding to the program of the broadcaster, is highlighted in a program page that displays a set of program listings, such as television program listings. If there are multiple program listings, listed in a program page, that are to be highlighted, then details of the respective contracts may be used to determine which program listing to highlight. Such details may include the total contract value, a ratio of contract value-to-page view, and/or the time of contract formation.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

selecting, by a server and based on at least one criterion, a plurality of content items;

transmitting, by the server for display on a media device, a plurality of identifiers associated with the selected plurality of content items;

identifying, by the server, a change in the at least one criterion; and

in response to the server identifying the change in the at least one criterion and without the media device requesting a message, initiating sending, by the server, the message to the media device;

wherein the message causes the media device to display a particular identifier, of the plurality of identifiers, visually distinguished from rest of the plurality of identifiers; and

wherein the particular identifier that is visually distinguished is selected based on the change in the at least one criterion.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, determining whether to select a first criterion or a second criterion as the at least one criterion for selecting the plurality of content items.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first criterion is selected if a contract is associated with a single identifier, from the plurality of identifiers, and the second criterion is selected if the contract is associated with multiple identifiers, from the plurality of identifiers.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining whether the first criterion is applicable for selecting the plurality of content items; and

selecting the second criterion in response to determining that the first criterion is not applicable for selecting the plurality of content items.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by causing the media device to display the particular identifier in a highlighted format.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

sending, by the server, date and time information to the media device, wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by causing the media device to display the particular identifier in the highlighted format according to the date and time information.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by displaying name of program listing associated with the particular identifier in a different color or font than the rest of the plurality of identifiers.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to newly formed contract associated with a service provider of the particular identifier.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to changes in contract value associated with a service provider of the particular identifier.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to a change in a number of page views remaining to trigger a payment for consuming content associated with a service provider of the particular identifier.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to expiration of a contract with a service provider of the particular identifier.

12. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

select, based on at least one criterion, a plurality of content items;

transmit for display on a media device, a plurality of identifiers associated with the selected plurality of content items;

identify a change in the at least one criterion; and

in response to the control circuitry identifying the change in the at least one criterion and without the media device requesting a message, initiating sending, by the server, the message to the media device;

wherein the message causes the media device to display a particular identifier, of the plurality of identifiers, visually distinguished from rest of the plurality of identifiers; and

wherein the particular identifier that is visually distinguished is selected based on the change in the at least one criterion.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to determine whether to select a first criterion or a second criterion as the at least one criterion for selecting the plurality of content items.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first criterion is selected by the control circuitry if a contract is associated with a single identifier, from the plurality of identifiers, and the second criterion is selected if the contract is associated with multiple identifiers, from the plurality of identifiers.

15. The system of claim 13 , further comprising, control circuitry configured to:

determine whether the first criterion is applicable for selecting the plurality of content items; and

select the second criterion in response to determining that the first criterion is not applicable for selecting the plurality of content items.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by causing the media device to display the particular identifier in a highlighted format.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising, control circuitry configured to send date and time information to the media device, wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by causing the media device to display the particular identifier in the highlighted format according to the date and time information.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the message causes the media device to display the particular identifier visually distinguished from the rest of the plurality of identifiers by displaying name of program listing associated with the particular identifier in a different color or font than the rest of the plurality of identifiers.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to either a newly formed contract or expiration of a contract associated with a service provider of the particular identifier.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the change in the at least one criterion is caused due to a change in a number of page views remaining to trigger a payment for consuming content associated with a service provider of the particular identifier.
