Abstract

A sample processing station includes two or more container holders on a platform that is rotatable about a central axis of rotation. Each holder is configured to rotate about a secondary axis of rotation. The station includes a capping/decapping mechanism to cap or decap a container held in one of the container holders and an elevator with a chuck guide that contact the container holder as the chuck is lowered by the elevator to positon the chuck with respect to the cap of the container held in the holder and to hold jaws of the container holder in a closed position. In embodiment, the chuck guide includes a yoke with opposed arms and spindles located near distal ends of the arms that engage beveled shoulders of the container holder.

Claims (29)

1 . A method of processing a biological sample, the method comprising:

(A) providing an input rack to a sample processing instrument, the input rack holding a sample container having a first diameter and a reaction vessel having a second diameter, wherein the first diameter is greater than the second diameter;

(B) after (A), moving the sample container and the reaction vessel from the input rack to a sample processing station contained within the sample processing instrument;

(C) at the sample processing station, transferring an amount of a biological sample from the sample container to the reaction vessel; and

(D) after (C), moving the sample container from the sample processing station to the input rack and the reaction vessel from the sample processing station to an output rack contained within the sample processing instrument.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the input rack includes a plurality of paired sample containers and reaction vessels, and wherein the method comprises performing (A)-(D) for each paired sample container and reaction vessel.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising reading a first barcode on the sample container and automatically applying a second barcode to a label on the reaction vessel, wherein the second barcode is associated with the first barcode.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second barcode is the same as the first barcode.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein automatically applying the second barcode to the label on the reaction vessel comprises placing the reaction vessel into a printer module and printing the second barcode directly onto the label.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating a first barcode on the sample container and a second barcode on the reaction vessel.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising communicating the association between the first and second barcodes to a biological sample analyzer.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising transferring the output rack from the sample processing instrument to the biological sample analyzer.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output rack is housed within an incubator module, and wherein the method further comprises, after (D), using the incubator module, heating the biological sample contained in the reaction vessel for a period of time.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after (C) and before (D), moving the reaction vessel to an incubator module and heating the biological sample contained withing the reaction vessel for a period of time.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, if a processing protocol fails during (C), pipetting the biological sample from the reaction vessel prior to (D).

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, if a processing protocol fails during (C), (D) comprises placing the reaction vessel into the output rack so that the second barcode cannot be read.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (B) and (D) are performed with a pick-and-place robot, and wherein (C) is performed with a pipettor.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (C) comprises:

(E) agitating the sample container;

(F) automatically removing a cap from the sample container;

(G) with a pipettor, automatically aspirating at least a portion of the biological sample from the sample container;

(H) automatically replacing the cap on the sample container;

(I) automatically removing a cap from the reaction vessel;

(J) with the pipettor, automatically dispensing at least a portion of the biological sample aspirated from the sample container into the reaction vessel; and

(K) automatically replacing the cap on the sample container.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein agitating the sample container comprises rotating the sample container about a central axis of rotation while simultaneously rotating the sample container about a secondary axis of rotation that is associated with the sample container and is radially spaced from the central axis of rotation.

16 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising performing an assay on the biological sample transferred from the sample container to the reaction vessel, wherein the reaction vessel is contained within the biological sample analyzer when the assay is performed.

17 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising, after (J), transferring the output rack from the sample processing instrument to the biological sample analyzer.

18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising performing an assay on the biological sample dispensed into the reaction vessel, wherein the reaction vessel is contained within the biological sample analyzer when the assay is performed.
