Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods and compositions for controlling asphaltenes in a subterranean formation. The compositions may include a halloysite nanotube. The nanotube has a lumen and a polymer, along with a charged surfactant, may be disposed in the lumen. A wax may be disposed on the nanotube. The wax may be disposed at either or both ends of the nanotube, thereby temporarily preventing the polymer and charged surfactant from leaving the lumen.

Claims (29)

1. A method of controlling asphaltenes, comprising:

adding an asphaltene inhibitor to a subterranean formation, wherein the asphaltene inhibitor comprises a halloysite nanotube (HNT), the HNT comprising a lumen, wherein the lumen of the HNT comprises a polymer and a charged surfactant, the charged surfactant comprising an amine and/or amide group.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises a weight average molecular weight ranging from about 100 Da to about 1,000 Da.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises an imidazoline or an imidazolinium.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of diethylene triamine (DETA)/tall oil fatty acid (TOFA)-imidazoline, DETA/TOFA-imidazoline acrylate, DETA/TOFA-imidazolinium, DETA/TOFA-imidazolinium acrylate, and any combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of

and any combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant is nonpolymeric.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is nonionic.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises a weight average molecular weight ranging from about 500 Da to about 500,000 Da.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises a monomer selected from the group consisting of isobutylene, butadiene, isoprene, ethylene, propylene, an acrylate, acrylamide, methacrylate, methacrylamide, and any combination thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is an alkyl phenol-formaldehyde polymer, an alkyl phenol-amine-formaldehyde polymer, a polyalkylene, a polyisobutylene succinic ester or a polyisobutylene succinimide.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises about 10 mole % to about 90 mole % of a nonylphenol and about 10 mole % to about 90 mole % of formaldehyde.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is a polyisobutylene succinic anhydride pentaerythritol ester, a dinonylphenol-formaldehyde-nonylphenol polymer, or a 4-nonylphenol-formaldehyde-diethylenetriamine.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charged surfactant is an anionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a zwitterionic surfactant, or any combination thereof.

14. A composition, comprising:

(a) a HNT having an outer surface and an inner surface defining a lumen, the lumen comprising a first end and a second end,

(b) a surfactant disposed within the lumen, wherein the surfactant is a charged surfactant comprising an amine and/or amide group, and

(c) a polymer disposed within the lumen.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the lumen consists of, or consists essentially of, the surfactant and the polymer.

16. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises a weight average molecular weight ranging from about 100 Da to about 1,000 Da.

17. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises an imidazoline or an imidazolinium.

18. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the charged surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of diethylene triamine (DETA)/tall oil fatty acid (TOFA)-imidazoline, DETA/TOFA-imidazoline acrylate, DETA/TOFA-imidazolinium, DETA/TOFA-imidazolinium acrylate, and any combination thereof.

19. A method of controlling asphaltenes in a subterranean formation, comprising:

preflushing the subterranean formation with an aqueous solution,

delivering an asphaltene inhibitor to a wellbore of the subterranean formation, wherein the asphaltene inhibitor comprises a HNT, the HNT comprising a lumen including a polymer and a charged surfactant,

transporting the asphaltene inhibitor to a surface within the subterranean formation, and

controlling asphaltenes in the subterranean formation.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the aqueous solution comprises the asphaltene inhibitor.
