CONTACT LENS COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS OF USE THEREOF
The invention provides contact lens storage, cleaning and treatment compositions comprising nonionic surfactants. The invention further provides methods for treating enhancing contact lens wear time and comfort, reducing contact lens deposits and treating dry eye via contact lenses.
1 . A contact lens storage composition comprising one or more nonionic surfactants selected from the group consisting of polysorbates, polyoxyls, cyclodextrins, poloxamers, alkyl aryl polyethers and polyoxyethyleneglycol alkyl ethers at a total concentration from about 1.5% to about 5.9% w/v and sodium chloride, wherein w/v denotes weight by total volume of the composition.
2 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more excipients selected from the group consisting of a polyol and a viscosity enhancer.
3 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 2 comprising:
two or more nonionic surfactants selected from the group consisting of polysorbate 80, polyoxyls, poloxamer 407, poloxamer 188, polyoxyl castor oil, hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin at a total concentration from about 1.5% to about 5.9% w/v;
a polyol from about 0.1% to about 4.0% w/v; and
a viscosity enhancer selected from the group consisting of cellulose derivatives, carbomers, gums, dextrans, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acids, povidone, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, chitosans, and hyaluronates and hyaluronic acids.
4 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 3 comprising:
from about 0.1% to about 2.5% w/v mannitol;
from about 0.01% to about 1.5% w/v of a cellulose derivative;
from about 0.1% to about 0.75% w/v sodium chloride; and
optionally, from about 0.05% to about 0.1% w/v magnesium chloride.
5 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 4 , wherein:
the two or more nonionic surfactants are selected from the group consisting of from about 0.01% to about 4.0% w/v of polysorbate 80, from about 0.01% to about 3.0% w/v of poloxamer 407, from about 0.01% to about 3.0% w/v of poloxamer 188, from about 0.01% to about 0.25% w/v of polyoxyl castor oil and from about 0.01% to about 5.0% w/v hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin.
6 . A contact lens storage composition comprising:
two or more nonionic surfactants selected from the group consisting of polysorbate 80, poloxamer 407, poloxamer 188, polyoxyl castor oil and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin at a total concentration from about 1.5% to about 5.9% w/v;
from about 0.1% to about 2.5% w/v mannitol;
from about 0.01% to about 1.5% w/v of a cellulose derivative;
from about 0.25% to about 5.0% w/v of a polyethylene glycol;
from about 0.1% to about 0.75% w/v sodium chloride;
from about 0.1% to about 0.12% w/v potassium sorbate;
optionally, from about 0.05% to about 0.1% w/v magnesium chloride; and
optionally, from about 3.0 to about 5.5 millimolar phosphate or citrate buffer,
wherein w/v denotes weight by volume of the composition.
7 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 6 , comprising:
two or more nonionic surfactants selected from the group consisting of from about 0.1% to about 2.0% w/v of polysorbate 80, from about 0.1% to about 2.0% w/v of poloxamer 407, from about 0.1% to about 1.0% w/v of poloxamer 188, from about 0.1% to about 0.1% w/v of polyoxyl castor oil and from about 0.5% to about 2.5% w/v hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin at a total concentration from about 1.5% to about 5.9% w/v.
8 . A contact lens storage composition comprising:
from about 0.7% to about 1.0% w/v polysorbate 80;
from about 0.7% to about 1.0% w/v poloxamer 407;
from about 0.14% to about 0.2% w/v poloxamer 188;
from about 0.18% to about 0.25% w/v polyoxyl castor oil;
from about 1.05% to about 1.50% w/v hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin;
from about 0.04% to about 1.0% w/v hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose;
from about 0.70% to about 0.75% w/v of a polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 400 Daltons;
from about 0.35% to about 0.53% w/v mannitol;
optionally, about 0.07% w/v magnesium chloride;
about 0.55% w/v sodium chloride; and
about 4.0 millimolar citrate buffer,
wherein w/v denotes weight by total volume of the composition.
9 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 8 , comprising:
about 0.7% w/v polysorbate 80;
about 0.7% w/v poloxamer 407;
about 0.14% w/v poloxamer 188;
about 0.18% w/v polyoxyl castor oil;
about 1.05% w/v hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin;
about 0.04% w/v hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose;
about 0.70% w/v of a polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 400 Daltons;
about 0.53% w/v mannitol; and
about 0.07% w/v magnesium chloride.
10 . The contact lens storage composition of claim 8 , comprising:
about 1.0% w/v polysorbate 80;
about 1.0% w/v poloxamer 407;
about 0.2% w/v poloxamer 188;
about 0.25% w/v polyoxyl castor oil;
about 1.50% w/v hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin;
about 1.0% w/v hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose;
about 0.75% w/v of a polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 400 Daltons; and
about 0.35% w/v mannitol.
11 . A storage solution comprising 70% of the composition of claim 8 and 30% saline water.
12 . A product comprising a contact lens storage container comprising a composition of claim 1 .
13 . A method of improving distance vision in a contact lens wearer comprising the steps of:
soaking a monovision contact lens in a composition of claim 1 ; and
inserting the monovision contact lens into an eye of the contact lens wearer,
wherein the distance vision of the contact lens wearer is improved compared to the distance vision of the contact lens wearer after inserting a monovision contact lens that was soaked in saline.
14 . A method of enhancing contact lens comfort comprising administering a composition of claim 1 to a subject in need thereof.
15 . A method of enhancing contact lens wear time comprising administering a composition of claim 1 of the present invention to a subject in need thereof.
16 . A method of reducing Acanthamoeba spp. cyst count on contact lenses comprising administering a composition of claim 1 to a contact lens surface or to a subject wearing a contact lens in need thereof.
17 . A method of treating dry eye comprising applying the artificial tear composition of claim 1 to a surface of a contact lens and inserting the contact lens into an eye of a subject in need thereof and optionally administering the artificial tear composition of claim 1 to the eye of the subject prior to inserting the contact lens.
18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the application of the composition of claim 1 to a contact lens surface occurs as an overnight storage.
19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the application of the composition of claim 1 to a contact lens surface occurs immediately prior to instillation of the contact lens to the eye.
20 . A method of reducing contact lens deposits comprising applying the artificial tear composition of claim 1 to a contact lens surface and optionally to an eye to which the contact lens is inserted.
21 . A method of enhancing Snellen acuity or contrast acuity comprising applying the composition of claim 1 to a contact lens.
22 . A method of treating dry eye syndrome comprising applying the composition of claim 1 to a contact lens.
